Okay...I have an 2 year old IBM hard drive...that I got with a Micron computer, and it is making a high pitched humming noise. I had this problem with a Maxtor, but the noise was worse, and the drive wouldn't be rocognized by my machine. I've run every diagnostic program that I can find on this hd...and I come back with no problems whatsoever everytime. Does anyone have any ideas...? Should I just call IBM? Is the drive on warrantee...was it ever since I got it with a Micron computer? Thanx...and sorry for all of the questions.

So much for the Maxtor the worst brand ever and IBM the best brand ever. Sorry, excuse me I just had to say that.

<<and the drive wouldn't be rocognized by my machine>>

Thats a sign of dying, if it ever gets recognized, back up all your data. Try an FDISK, you might save it, but the chances are the problem will reoccur. I would recommend calling IBM for an RMA.

We meet again...

you aren't listening:

<< I had this problem with a Maxtor, but the noise was worse, and the drive wouldn't be rocognized by my machine. >>

The IBM is recognized and there is no problem whatsoever...the Maxtor is the one that wasn't recognized. I'm drawing a parallel between the two incedents and showing the differences. This will recognize, and scandisk and the IBM Drive fitness test don't show any bad sectors or other problems.

My hard drive had been making a humming noise for two years. I have never had any problems with it. The humming is kind of like an electronic whine. If that's not what you're talking about, then I wouldn't know if it's good or bad.

No...I haven't tried MaxDiag. Should I...is it okay to use it with an IBM hard drive. If you've had the humming that I've had for 2 years...I don't know how you can tollerate it...it drives me mad. I can't sleep, I can't concentrate...It is maddening...I'm on my laptop now, I'll try maxdiag in a while.

I have an IBM drive that sometimes hums. Otherwise, it works fine. I e-mailed IBM tech support about it and they said it might be a sign of a problem. So as long as the hum (high pitched) doesn't get much worse and the drive continues to function properly, I will not worry about it.

Yes...but it drives me insane. I can't do anything when the computer is on...it is like a dog-whistle to me. It spurs migrane headaches. It doesn't just do it...every once and a while...it does it all the time. I just emailed IBM...we'll see what they say. I hope it is still on warrantee...I don't know if getting it with a micron changes things.

I have a 4 year old IBM drive that started huming after two or three years. It usually only hums right after it's been turned on though. I assume it means it's going to fail...but if so then IBM's sure take their sweet time failing :)

Okay...maybe I'm not explaining it well. I know that hard drives hum. I've had a computer in some for for the last 12 years...I understand what they sound like. I'm talking about a high pitched screech that makes me go insane. This happened to an old Maxtor hard drive...and it failed. But it failed right after it started. This HD is still working, but I can't take keepingmy computer one. It drives me crazy.

I hope you know the write test with MaxDiag will wipe your drive?
I myself wouldn't run it on an IBM however, IBM must have their own software.

what version of maxtor do you have
the 6800 and plus 40 are excellent
anything before 6800 is crap

Try putting the computer cover back on if you can find it.

Some thick felt or some foam attached to the inside of the computer cover, and perhaps on the inside bottom of the case, should lower the noise level.

Sorry, I read the question wrong, thought you had a maxtor. Seagate has a utility that will run on other brand name HD's. It's called seatools.
