Reasonable deal. Used to be that you could only get a 40gb Series 2 for this price. My guess is that new models are on the way. If you're interested, it's very easy to upgrade the storage on these to 400gb or so for about $150 in parts. Good luck in any case.

Sigh...there are always going to be newer models of everything. Are you always going to be afraid to unbox anything you get because something newer will be coming out?

Dude dont be such an @ss! I know there will always be new tech, but from the way he put it I didnt know if there was a new model coming out in a week or so the I didnt know of. I am new to the tivo stuff but wanted one and saw this (what I thought was a deal). If there is a new model that someone already knows of and I didnt that had something worth waiting for then I wanted to know about it.

$12.95 a month for life or $299 is more than a deal killer. That and not really working with HDTV or digital cable.

What do you mean? I don't have digital cable or hd tv so that is irrelevant to me. You have digital cable and are paying $50-60 a month for life on that arent you? So what is really the difference. I just wanted to see if this tivo unit is a good deal compared to another of the same style. Not whether or not you think the TIVO service is a good deal or not! I know what the service costs.

It won't work on Digital Cable? Why not?

It will work with digital cable. Wont work with HD obviously, but a cable box is no problem. Just takes a second longer to change channels.

This would be a really sweet deal if it had TiVo Basic for free. I think BB had some 80 hour units for < $100 around Xmas, so this might be the new price for 80 hr units in the coming months.

I think it will. but not for hd only broadcasts
From there web site:
TiVo works with:
Cable box (digital or analog)
Satellite receiver
Cable (with or without a converter box)
Rooftop antenna
Old-fashioned "rabbit ears"

Who the hell is Humax????
I'd be leary buying a Tivo from anyone other than Tivo.
Are you sure these Humax models can be hacked like the regular Tivo's?

FYI: I canceled my premium channels after getting Tivo because it allowed me to watch all of the network shows that I previously refused to watch due to the glut of commercials! I run my cable directly into the Tivo and let it change the basic cable channels. I've heard that the IR blaster will occasionally screw up and not change the cable box channel, hence a missed show.

Last year a number of 3rd party TiVos hit the market. The Toshiba my folks got works great. The TiVo Basic for free on 3rd party units is also really nice for cheap people like me.

With all the hookups on my digital cable box, I can't believe there isn't a direct cable connection for changing channels between these two boxes. The thing even has a firewire connection in it. Couldn't they at least have a serial connection or something?

Thanks,
I visited some friends over the holiday that had just gotten Tivo and was amazed at how ignorant they were on how it should be used. One guy told me he couldn't believe he would ever need more than 40 hours of recording time (duh). Another guy only used his to watch live TV and occasionally paused the show (double duh). They both kept constantly deleting Tivo recorded shows so they wouldn't run out of space. I hacked mine with an additional 120GB and NEVER watch live TV. I let my Tivo manage the space so it's always full of shows to watch. Season passes are the way to go with Tivo!

So tivo is worth the subcription? In your opinion
How many hours per gig does hacking leave you with?
should I wait till the warranty runs out to hack it?

Definitely worth the subscription.
You get a little over one hour per GB at low quality but nobody records at low quality because it really sucks. Of the four quality settings, the highest or next to highest are the way to go and they give you about 1 hour for every 2GB. Don't worry about the warranty, make sure you do the disk backup and you can always restore it back as original. I've done hacks for several friends and never had a problem yet. Tivo even lets you cancel your activation without charge within the first 30 days so I activate the Tivo, test it, hack it, cancel the activation and give it back to my friend so they can activate it under their name.

ChuckyH,
I'm a longtime TiVo devotee--get the box. Humax is a TiVo licensee and they're fine. Just like Dell doesn't make their own computers anymore (they OEM them from manufacturers in Asia) so Humax is simply OEM'ing TiVo stuff. They're well known within the TiVo community.

As for "new" models, TiVo has been blowing out the 40gb models and, from you post, it looks like the 80gb units are on the way out too. At the least they'll likely roll out models with more storage, as well as possibly new capabilities like HDTV support.

If you were asking for advice--I didn't read all the thread!--I'd say buy today. You don't have HDTV, so who cares about that. And the box does work--and look great--with digital cable TV, which is what I've got at home.

BTW, the one really worthwhile upgrade is to expand the storage on your machine. Try to pick up a couple of cheap, large PATA drives at a Fry's/Outpost sale. I found 200gb for $49 AR and put two in my machine. The upgrade software is free although you'll also need a mounting bracket and cables--all are cheap. Post or email is you want some help in the process. Good luck with your purchase decisions!
