From my understanding the current run up in population has to do with life extension, but the global birth rate is now just slightly below replacement rate. It just people are living longer so there are more total people living at once.

Yeah my point was look at annual births vs death to get a clear picture.

I have 2 kids and no desire for more.

Population growth rate has been declining for decades and world population is projected to effectively plateau after a few more.

That said, I wouldn't object to a 3 or 4 kid limit. That's fantasy though.

Even with the % decline that doesn't translate into a missive amount of people. We have been stuck around 80M new people added to the planet for a while and I don't expect us to dip down under 75M any time soon. Unfortunately I don't see how you could possibly fix this issue.

Sustainability demands that we at least stop our population increase. A growth based model is nothing but suicide and it needs to be recognized as such. We all know this. But has it simmered? Upstairs? For real? Dont think so. If it had it would we obvious to *ALL OF US* that the only real path forward to population control on a massive scale is but one : Elevate your neighbors standard of living. Infrastructure. In case people haven't realized yet, there's a very weak relationship between nation's population and it's contribution to climate change. Take for an example two nations bordering on the Himalayas but one of them aren't emitting anywhere as much greenhouse gasses as their neighbor is so take a guess which one have the most factories or other industrial capacity between them ?

One thing we NEED to do though is end the practice of paying people to have kids. No tax breaks or other benefits or incentives after the second kid. No increase in SNAP or anything else. Maybe even make birth costs higher after the second, though I'm not sure that's possible.

Seems that missing from this discussion is fact that the US (Canada, Australia, and a few others too) is extremely wasteful with resources per capita and we don't really want to take responsibility for that.

The majority of tax credits and deductions having to do with children are related to the lower and middle-class. The upper-class, such as the Child tax credit of $2,000 per child phases out at incomes > $200k (Single).

The bottom class is essentially the main reproducing force of the US. The upper-middle and upper classes are the ones who delay for the longest time - hence the background plot of the movie Idiocracy.

I don't think less well off people have kids to get a tax break, because overall the tax break doesn't cover the cost of a kid.

Agreed that they are reproducing more, but there are other reasons IMO such as education, career, birth control, religion, etc.
