"Bargain-hungry shoppers braved the early morning hours, chilly temperatures and crowds to score deals on "must-have" holiday items. Some retailers -- including Kmart -- were open for business Thanksgiving Day. The day after Thanksgiving is dubbed "Black Friday" because it marks the period when retailers move out of the red and into the black, or profitability."

Or Profitability? Somehow that just dosen't fit.

you're right, it does seem rather strange appended to the end of an otherwise fine sentence...

Mr. Oxford 😛 (read the other BF thread 😉 )

It fits just fine. In programs like excel, red is often used to denote negative account balance. Thus moving into black = profitability.

Typically most CNN written articles are terrible. They almost always contain some sort of grammatical error and often look like they were written by a 7th grader.

If you notice though, most of the articles on CNN are just reposts from the AP and Reuters. Major news outlets are just recycled content.

Aphex & Sysbuilder05 - you're both fvcking morons. The former for not understanding a sentence that makes perfect sense, the latter for trying to politicize a phrase that has been established for years. Idiots!

But the article is written just fine.

Writers need to keep the level of education of their audience in mind 🙂 😛

It's called Black Friday because it's traditionally the day retailers move into the black. They didn't name it this at the start of the Bush administration; it's just a general fact of life. Sheesh.

Wouldn't it sound better with PROFITABLE?

RED = ADJ
BLACK = ADJ
PROFITABILITY = NOUN
PROFITABLE = ADJ

When used as "the red" and "the black" as written in the sentence, they are nouns. 🙂

I read it as "the red/black (zone, area, proximity.. whatever you wanna call it)."
