Huh... neither Sam 860 PRO I have are recognised by my hard drive enclosure

The 850 PROs were read by it fine, and the 860s are working via SATA in other machines, but the enclosure won't even get detected by my computer if the 860s are connected. If I connect a HDD, it works fine.

Any ideas why? The simplest explanation is that my hard drive enclosure is starting to bite the bullet, but it seems a bit too selective for that to be the problem.

I mean, I've heard of specific enclosures having compatibility problems before, but that still seems weird. What model enclosure if I may ask?

ICY DOCK GB881U3-1SA

It gets a lot of use, but this is the first time I recall having any issue with it. I could try pulling its predecessor out of retirement in the bottom of a box somewhere and see what that thinks about the drives.

Thread update: I saw a cheap USB3 2.5" HDD enclosure for sale recently, brand 'Inateck', model FE2004. It can read the 860 PRO without any issues by the looks of it (brand-new drive showed up under Linux, unpartitioned as expected, whereas the same drive with the 'ICY DOCK' was a complete no-show.

The drive that didn't show, was it partitioned/formatted beforehand? Some docks may only work with partitioned drives. Strange, yes I know.

It (the OP) was a while ago now so I wouldn't like to say. However I could connect it using the working enclosure, set up a partition, then connect it up to the other enclosure and see what happens.

- one partition later, still nothing -

- edit - on second thought, I'm not sure I did whatever was necessary in Lubuntu's disks utility to commit the partition changes to disk.

I tried the experiment you suggested again, and the ICY DOCK couldn't read the drive even with a partition set up on it.
