HUGE widescreen projector?

Anybody here work in the cinema business? I want to find a projector that is capable of taking care of a very large screen. I need the cost of the initial hardware and whatever maintenance is typical for it. I know that theatres have been replacing old film projectors with new DLP projection... don't know if that is in the price range I'm looking for.

Film or digital projection? (I assume you want digital... I don't know of too many places you can buy cheap 35mm prints).

Anyways, how large are we talking... 10'? more?

How much can you control the lighting in the room?

What kind of screen material? What is the gain (if you know).

I worked part time in the local theater after hours helping straighten up. A buddy of mine is the manager. And they are switching to DLP projectors for the "pre-movie" advertisements. But they don't use them for the actual movies that are on reels. I've heard of them doing such a thing because the cost of those reels would knock your socks off. Personally I've never seen anything like what you are talking about.
Any HIGH end DLP projector would work , and could give you the size you want , but you need the throw distance to be far enough for it to work. Which would also mean a bulp with pretty decent light output (Lumens).
I've shot my projector out the second story window of my brothers house onto the neighbors roof , and pretty much covered the entire roof of the house.. they live on a dark street , and it was a dark night so it was funny projecting pRon onto the roof!!

How big are you talking? I know InFocus has some pretty big consumer projectors on the order of 12 feet or so..,

There are a few projector companies out there that make what you are looking for. But are you sure you have the $100,000+ dollars to spend on such a beast. Take a look at Barco or Panasonic for some examples. In this past summers large projector shoot out at INFOCOM, I thought they had the best image.

Oh yeah, these projectors are HUGE! Bulbs cost from $800 and up and generally take three of em.

I used to work at a movie theater back in high school and some longer movies were about 2 reels....and WOW they are HUGGEEEE!!!!

I think, what I saw/moved was the harry potter one and it was about 60 lbs, we had to have 2 people to move it, not just heavy but the size !

but yes, what we had at AMC was a DLP for the advertisements and switched over for the actual movie.

One of the local theaters in Hartford has a DLP now, complete with a THX system (non-IMAX). It's amazing. I watched cars there...no lines or skips like film reals have, just a smooth, crystal-clear picture. I definately think they're the wave of the future, just wish more theaters could afford them!

I dunno if you need to go that big with it... for $10k you can get a 6000 lumen model : Sony VPL-FX52 that would get you about 300" diagonal.

Consumer level projectors aren't going to cut it in that environment.

Bulbs alone for a Christie CP2000 are $2500+, still looking for a price tag on the actual projector.

Looks like in the neighborhood of $100K for the projector.

You looking to go bigger then that?

50 ft = 600 in > 300 in 😛

Plus projectors like ours are not going to look so hot at their manufacture spec maximum 😉

What kind of ambient conditions for the viewing environment? A $25,000 PJ will handle a 600" screen with no problem in a very dark auditorium. If you need to have lots of brightness the price goes way up and you will need a 30A 208VAC 3F circuit available as the larger units have 5-10+ kW drivers for larger Xenon lamp systems.

This is true it would be a pretty dark picture at the end of the max spec wouldnt it.
