HUGE V-core

OK. Here's the problem. I built myself a completely new pc. I have been verry unfortunate though. First of all, I waited 2 weeks to have my MOBO RMA'd because it was warped and was completely unstable.

Now I decided to OC my venice and I got it up to 2.4ghz. Problem is that I cannot push it ANY further than that, and to keep it at that speed I am pusing 5.135v through it. I know that is HUGE. First off, I would like to be able to OC a lot more. I am deciding whether to get a new heatsynk or not as my temps right now are 35 on idle and 50 on load (which I think is preety big). Do you guys have any idea why I need so much voltage and why I am running so hot?

Here's my rig.

3200+ Venice
A8n-e motherboard
7800gt V-modded mem to 490/1270
2x 1gb OCZ platinum @ 2325 timings OC'd to 233@ 2325 timings and completely stable
Western Digital wd1600js Sata 2 HDD

I would LOVE to have that proc. at 2.8ghz (maybe higher if I get the Big-Typhoon). I just can't believe I'm so unlucky as to get 2 bum things while buying a pc. (mobo and processor). However I hope it is my fault with the processor, and not the processor itself. My chipset may also be running too hot as I touch it and it is verry hot to the touch, but I dont' think that would affect it too much.

ANY help would be highly appreciated.

download cpu-z and then tell us what your cpu voltage is. You should see it on the first tab of cpu-z. I dont believe that you at running on 5.135v. For 2.4ghz on a venice 3200 I wonldnt even go over 1.5v

Ya, I used cpuz a lot. here's a what I see. It alternates between 1.535 and 1.552. this is UBER annoying.

shoot, I accidentally replied with nothing. anyway, ya so that's my stuff. I don't know. I am not happy. it is WAY too high and the voltage does not correspond with what i put in the bios: 1.51xx

also my ram does not correspond with what it should be. 282fsb and 333/400 mem. divider. it should be 235mhz, but in cpuz it says 218mhz. I tried most bios versions from 1.5 to 1.10 for my a8n-e and nothing yet...... damn. Is it a bum processor?

I ran this a while ago. I know it's normal to alternate, however I don't think it's normal to be pushing so much V throuh it and have souch a low OC, AND not be able to push it ANY hgiher...... I knwo this isn't normal for a venice.

What is your:

HT Freq x Multiplier?
Cpu multiplier?
Mem div?
Cpu voltage (in bios)
mem settins (in bios)
How many hours have you ran memtest86 and prime95 and what are the results?

Then maybe we can help.

Also give us you system default settings.

kk. Here goes.

HT(Hypertransport) = 282x3
cpu multiplier = 8.5
mem divider = 333/400
cpu voltage = 5.1x
mem settings = 234mhz, 2 3 2 5, 2.85v.
I ran prime for 18 hours stable, and then i stopped it.
I ran Memtest for about 5 hours without a single error.

My system stock is:
amd athlon venice 3200 (2ghz)
OCZ platinum 3200 timings: 2 3 2 5
HT- 5x
FSB- 200
Multiplier - 10
Divider- 1:1

7800gt 445/1060 (don't see how it could help, but hey)
I have a 450w psu so I believe it's adequate.

I hope that's enough info.

oh. SOMETIMES my pc locks up, but like after loading, not durring a game. I think it's because my videocard did nor recieve enough voltage. Now that I voltmodded it, the problem seems to have went away so far....

EDIT: I had a total of 2 lockups in a month so It's nothing serious in my oppinion, however it might show that something's wrong as my previous pc was rock solid and never locked up on me.

Lockups are usually caused by memory issues. Are you running prime95 in blend mode? That can sometimes catch errors that memtest doesn't . . . Also whats the ampage rating on the 12V of you PSU . . . you usually want at least 25A . . .

I'l check my psu. The antec PSU is famed for being extremely good though so I just don't see what could possibly be wrong with it. i'l check anyway. Also i am using blended mode of course, so no ram problems. Once I get my pc OC'd to what I want it to (hopefully) I will downclock my ram a little bit from 234 - 230.

Ah yes, the infamous 1/2 mult bug has gotten another victim! :)

the .5 mults make you think your ram is actually running faster than you think...

it's the way the mem controller handles the .5 mult.

cpu-z is right... it calculates it the correct way.

Wait a minute, so your running your cpu at 2397mhz? If so then try these settings for a change. It might yield better results.

HT(Hypertransport) = 240x4
cpu multiplier = 10
mem divider = 166 (0.83)
cpu voltage = 1.45v

I dont know why you wanted to run on HT multi at 3x, that usually used when ur crossing over 2.6ghz. Try these settings.

Yeah, messing with half dividers is a bad idea since it mess with you HT. I ran 310x8.5 once on my winnie and it gave me 283 mhz instead of 310 mhz. If you're gonna do 2.4 ghz use 240x10 166 mem like Samz said . . .

NOP. I just tried that exact thing, and I failed prime 95 in less than a minute......

well, it will work for sure. I tried that exact combination before and was stable. Should I try upping the voltage to 1.51x and then raising the core to 2.5? maybe it'l work? I'l give that a spin now.

Again, NOP. I booted into windows, but am not stable......

My San Diego can easily do 2.4 and almost 2.5 at stock. 2.6 requires around 1.5ish. It doesn't scale linearly, and so you gotta start cranking volts into my cpu to get higher.

stock san diego is 2.2 ghz 3700+

and 2.4 ghz 4000+

but they have 1 meg L2 vs. 512kb L2 on the venice

also there is the fx-55 (2.6 gh) and fx-57 (2.8 ghz).

new opterons aren't called san diego's but they also have 1 meg L2

144 - 1.8 ghz + 1 meg L2
146 - 2.0 ghz + 1 meg L2
148 - 2.2 ghz + 1 meg L2
150 - 2.4 ghz + 1 meg L2
152 - 2.6 ghz + 1 meg L2
