Oh, please. The raving, threats, accusations and sanctions by the Bush Admin only strengthened Conservatives' hold on Iran. They're afraid of us, rightfully so.

I can't even begin to point out how misguided you are.

1) The rallies and riots in support of the opposition candidate were far greater than a couple thousand loonies that showed up in support of Ahmadinejad, signifying the people want their democracy. It's like how there's always a couple thousand loonies that show up for their teabagging rallies here in the US. 🙂

2) The president has no power. He's virtually a state-sponsored Rush Limbaugh whose sole goal is saber rattling. Yours are obviously rattled.

3) Another typical P&N armchair general advocating the destruction of an entire nation with 74 million people because, again, a few loonies showed up supporting someone you don't support.
 
What's the bet an Iranian civil war will start right after they get nukes and Israel launches air strikes? Murphy's law right?

Seriously though, all this is is the government saying "Look we can protest too!" and trying to beat the protesters at their own game. And they're failing. Kinda pathetic actually, you'd think they'd be happy enough with their Interwaha..er..Basij minions running around doing their work for them.

I have hard time believing 1) Iran's state media 2) people getting buses and day off work to "demonstrate" are there out of their free will.

The same kind of simpering cowardly swine that vote Republican because of national security issues, tough on crime issues, and conservatively religious, are the same kind of cowardly swine that are pro Islamic Republic in Iran. It is the same self-hating inferiority in both cases that motivates and drives people to worship power in both cases and in both cases one will despise the other, seeing themselves in each other.

structurally the president has no power but behind the scenes it appears that imadinnerjacket may have considerable power through his extensive connections to the security forces. he may actually intimidate khamenei.

Many of those attending the pro-government rallies were government workers who were given the day off and strongly encouraged to do so. These rallies were highly televised in Iran.

It's a typical tinpot dictator tactic, odds are the people in Iran know very well the real mood of the country and these show rallies will have absolutely no effect.

If the Green Party protestors and the minority seperatists in Iran start to trust each other and work together then regime change there will be a bygone conclusion. Until then, who knows.

I hope the country doesn't burn. I hope it turns into Iraq. Have you been there? Practically on every street corner people are praising Bush, lol, thank you Bush, we owe it to you Bush, thank you. It seems quite silly. But thankfulness for the blessings they've received and how much better their lives are...that is not really silly, I guess.
 
No, I think we can safely say the internal Iranian protests have long ago reached critical mass. If they had not reached critical mass the street demonstrations would have faded away over time.

But as it is, the mainline Iranian government is very strong and resistant to any change. And its not surprising that they tried the counter demonstration ploy.

I suspect it will not help the existing Iranian government much, and if they continue their hard line and refuse to compromise, they too well may go the way of the Shah.

I would place money on most of these rallies being a mix of a minority of supporters and a lot of paid and or coursed supporters. Ahmadinejad does have, like all right wing religious wackos everywhere unfortunately, a fair amount of support amongst the poor. Country wide though I would be surprised if real support for him is very high. People in most brutal dictatorships hate where they are but just want to maintain the status quo so long as they themselves are not hurting any more than their neighbours and they have food and a roof over their heads. Political upheaval in these situations is often bloody and doesn't necessarily end with a better situation and most people living there know that. It takes a lot of courage to step up against such regimes and usually the hotbeds for this kind of mentality is amongst the young and the educated, see universities.

Go march or die! Iran is not a democracy. Grow up already. Iran is a dictatorship with a religious king! If you dont cooperate, you die or your family members stay in prison or disappear.
