HUGE Sudden Temp Changes!?!?

troubledshooter

Senior member
I'm fighting a video problem (thanks to ndivia and VIA) but would like to begin seeing how far I will be able to push my system once my card stabilizes.

I am starting from the defaults and just want to slowly move as far in the direction of performance as I can. I would like any pointers on jump sizes, what order to go in etc. but that is not the issue at hand.

Optimized Defaults set:
Clock Speed: 750
CAS: 3
Memory Clk: Host Clk
AGP Drv: Auto
System Temp: 25
CPU Temp: 27-8

Goals:
Clock Speed: 900+
CAS: 2
Memory Clk: Host+PCI Clk
AGP Drv: Optimal
System Temp: <40
CPU Temp: <40

Temp of CPU after 15 min of Q3: 36

It is that huge diffence between the temp of the processor just after 15 min of Q3 that troubles me. Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong? System temp reads the same....

thanks again!

That is not odd at all. Esp if youre using a a chip which measure the temp from an on-die thermal sensor. Those are very accurate and report temp changes instantly. It doesnt take time for the core to heat up, basically it changes temp based on load at almost real time. With RC5 running my P3 840@1.7V (600E cA2) tops at 35C when room temp is 20C.

At idle my CPU temps are: 20/27

So youre temps aren't bad at all really. Consider above 48C as hot and the max at 58C. The rate of change isn't what matters, as long as it doesn't go too hot.

1. Thanks for the temp info...don't know where to sensor is, but it does update in near real-time, so I suppose it must be on die. The only thing that troubles me though, is that twice I have crashed in q3 (before I determined I should step back and take things slowly) running at 900 when the temp sensor only reported 41...this doesn't seem to me to be enough of a differnce to cause a lockup. The only way I could see this being the case is that my temp sensor is NOT on die, but then how does it update so quickly? (so you know, the 15 min is lots longer than it takes. When i run the timedemo thing in q3, in under 30 secs, i exit Q3, get to Via hardware monitor, the thingy reports about 32.) I was a little befuddled by this which is why I set everything back to core and decided to go a little slower since I am a little new.

2. Limited stability at all (this is a geforce2 MX board you may have noticed, not a GTS) with my abit kt7 (kt133) and eVGA geforce2 MX. Using default mobo settings, and old 5.32 drivers I can get a couple of hours MAX out of the setup, using the 6.18 drivers I get about 45 secs. Disabling fast writes gets me into windows, but thats about all I can manage. eVGA claims this problem is VIA's, but that Nvidia is fixing it...

thanks for your help

I only wish it were that easy 🙁

Interestingly enough, I also only seem to be able to manage stability with the 5.32 drivers if my appeture size is 32. I haven't tried 256, but 64 and 128 crash me EVERY time 🙁

thanks for your help. I promise if it requires a d/l I have tried it (unless you have a beta for the 6.2!--I even was using the directx 8 beta for a bit. Helped with D3D stability and let me cntrl-alt-del when quake crashed too).

thanks again!

yes 🙁

and a number of other things. I'm afriad there is little I can do until the hotshot driver programmers at nvidia get the 6.2 drivers out of QA

thanks again though

Hi there Warrenton can you take a look at a posting I just put up entitled GeForce 2GTS & MX & ATi Rage128 with game problems. I too am running a Via 133a and have a lot of grief with 2 games. If you get a chance I would appreciate it sir.

Thanks Philster.
