IIRC, there was an article or a paper written about just such a hypothesis... - and that hypothesis seems pretty natural, given a couple of generations growing up with Star Trek to watch. (Star Trek is fiction, in case anyone isn't sure. And, it's not based on actual events - that was Dragnet)

However, the article went into detail about what constitutes life - that is, what traits would something have to share with other life-forms to be considered life... or what subset of traits would constitute life.
The conclusion of that article was that life most likely required either carbon or silicon. Either Oxygen or Sulfur. and most likely, hydrogen. (I can't remember if Nitrogen was required). This is due to the nature of the types of chemical reactions that would be necessary for a life form to exist. (and I'm not 100% sure that Silicon was a true possibility.. it seems that it came along with an "unlikely".) Nonetheless, life forms have been found at volcanic vents in the ocean that are surviving based on sulfur rather than oxygen. It's probably possible for lifeforms to evolve in an atmosphere of sulfur dioxide.

The biggest problem though is narrowing down our definition of what is a life form. Is a robot a life form? If the robot is designed to build new robots like itself, is it a life form then? (asexual reproduction?!) What if the robot had artificial intelligence? THEN is it a life form?

so god is playing a practical joke on us so that we have to try really hard to believe in him?

haha. God I love his stupidity sometimes.

The water on earth came from space. In fact, we get more water each year from asteriods made of ice. I'm not sure how much water...its not really a significant amount year to year, but over a billion or so years, things add up.
But... the Earth is only 6,000 years old.

We all know that the Grand Canyon formed in 6,000 years.
We all know it takes less than 6,000 years for crude oil to form.
We all know it takes less than 6,000 years for fossils to form.
We all know it took less than 6,000 years for the mountain range 50 miles east of me to form.
We all know it took less than 6,000 years for Hawaii to form..

;)

And 6000 years for the Continents to split up
6000 years for atlantis to sink
6000 years to have rocks that date back millions of years to form...oh wait

:p

Ah, so Gawd wants to trick us all into going to Hell. I get it now.

Pluto, currently the most distant true planet, is in such an orbit.
Wasn't Pluto's status as a planet taken away because it was too small or didn't share some other characteristics of all the other planets?

:Q

The universe wasn't created with the appearance of age, LOL... I mean huh...

We can see the aging process all around us. It happens on both micro and macro levels.

Everything in the universe is cause and effect, things don't just "happen". The huge gorge we call the Grand Canyon didn't just appear there, it was worn away through erosion just like every other gorge on the planet.

Crude oil didn't just appear in the ground, there was a chemical process that created it.

The mountain range 50 miles east of me didn't just appear, it has been pushed up by the colliding tectonic plates.

Hawaii hasn't always been there. It was formed through underwater volcanic activity. You can clearly see the path the plate has taken by looking at the swath the islands create. The next island will not pierce the surface of the water for some time yet.

I repeat what I've said before.. to think the Earth is 6,000 years old requires a gross lack of understanding in some of the most basic Earth sciences concepts.

I think you're missing his point. He's saying that god put all those things there 6000 years ago, and set it all up so that it would work exactly the way you just outlined, when in fact it was just a lie.

I think that's ludicrous not because of my understanding how the earth was formed, but because I think the idea that there is a god out there who designed the world to trick us into going to hell is pretty fuckking stupid.

Why does one have to think the earth is 6000 years old to believe in God. I have faith in God, but I think the earth is billions of years old. I don't get the correlation.

Me neither. Believing that it is 6000 years old means accepting EVERY WORD in the Bible as literal, but it's very clear that a LOT of it is figurative. It's telling a story, and it uses language to help people visualize what's going on. The book of Revelation is the best example, but not the only one.

And as far as having to believe in the 6000 thing to believe in God, I know a nun who believes in evolution. :)

Maybe the Earth is only 6000 years old for us. Maybe God picked it up at an intergalactic, multidimensional Garage sale slightly used and we're just some project he started.

2 Peter 3:8 - But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.

I've always thought that this verse did away with the very literal interpretations of abstract measurements of time in the Bible (e.g. 1st day this, 2nd day that, 3rd day...).

At any rate. I've entertained the thought of God having made the universe and earth to look to be millions of years old when in fact it may only be 6000 years old. It's not one that I place much stock in, though.

This thread is getting very much off the original topic, so I'll try to steer it back on topic.

Interesting read. Those guys in the resonant orbits are really hauling ass. :)

Bible.

The Bible never mentions the age of the earth. Some churches (usually the extreme fundamentalists ones) have tried to extrapolate the earth's age based on stories in the Bible, but that's just one man's interpretation. So you have more faith in what your preacher tells you to believe, rather than the facts of the Bible.

The object is about 570 km across, making it one of the largest bodies of its kind found in modern times.
As opposed to the bodies in deep space that were found by the Babylonians?
