about 100,000 laser printers are being recalled because they can overheat and burst into flame. Comforting thought.

Almost certainly during the print process, modern laser printers don't heat their fuser during the initial power-on phase.

The only problem with that is that it's gonna happen in the wrong offices !

I would beg to differ on that. :)

Many of the the monochrome printers I support frequently go well over 500K pages, & I've seen a few over 1 million pages.

And that's out of <$1,500 printer.

I won't make any claims as to the personal level stuff, or the non-laser products, but their corporate level lasers rock.

Corporate level yes. But anything under the 4100 series is seriously overpriced for what you get. Their entry level laser stuff is double the price of the competition and offers little to no benefits.

HP's corporate level lasers do indeed ROCK ... we have a few LaserJet 4's and MP5's (not sure on the model numbers) but we do A LOT of printing here at the bank ... thousands of pages a week, other than some minor squeaking (lube job) and some paper jams these are without a doubt awesome printers.

However when it comes to home/small office I think Brother gives you better bang for your buck than overpriced HP does.

How do they get the fuser up to temperature for a print job?
Is there a bit of a pause while the fuser heats up?

All the older IBM, Lexmark, Panasonic, H-P, Kyocera, Canon, Wang, etc. printers I worked on heated the fuser up during POR.

Instant on fusers are wonderful things. :)

First page out time is around 12 seconds, then subsequent pages at 25 ppm. 0-~400° in just a few seconds is cool.

Older printers kept the fuser warm since they took longer to reach that temperature.

Wow, that is impressive!

What are they using for the heating element?
We only had incandescent lamps.

I don't know for sure, I've never taken one apart. They're user-replaceable, held in by mounting clips. Very easy to get in & out with no tools required.

The HP laserjets (4000, I think) at my office are the worst printers in our environemnt. We have a Xerox that churns out like 45 ppm while the HP churns out like 15 ppm when its printing our layout diagrams. The xerox also offsets the print jobs to make separating easier. The HP doesnt do that, not even the HP 9000 we just got 2 weeks ago.

Of course, those small printers cant compare to the Toshiba behemoths we also have. The Toshiba DP8070 (80 ppm) has 4.5 million copies on it, while the smaller and slower DP4580 (45 ppm) has 2.5 million copies on it.

I personally print about 3,000 pages during my 8 hour shift, and during a 24-hour period, my department probably goes through 6,000-7,000 pages DAILY :D

thats a lotta trees

does the printer keep record of how many pages it prints?
