Spanish police have fired rubber bullets and baton-charged protesters attending a rally against austerity.

The clashes occurred as protesters tried to tear down barriers blocking access to the parliament in Madrid, reports said.

Metal barriers had been placed around the building to block access from every possible direction.

Demonstrators - known as Indignants - say "Occupy Congress" is a protest against the kidnapping of democracy.

At least one protester has been injured in the clashes, with several arrests reported as police try to prevent demonstrators gaining access to Congress.

Crazy I wonder if they'll get any of the politicians ousted. I noticed a straight lack of this coverage in our media though. Wonder why that is?

So, it's about "austerity".

And having your fed govt benefits reduced is akin to "the kidnapping of democracy". (The quote about people voting themsleves others' money comes to mind.)

And, yes, seems to me quite a few things are mysteriously under-reported by certain segments of our media.

Police used batons to push back some protesters at the front of the march attended by an estimated 6,000 people as tempers flared, and some demonstrators broke down barricades and threw rocks and bottles toward authorities.
[AFP]

6,000 people not only is not huge, but it's actually tiny.

Traditionally it has never been unusual for European marches and demonstration to attract as many as 1 million people, even in periods of extremely good economic performances.

A lot of Americans have been looking down upon these troubled European countries for their inability to tolerate government austerity.

Remember, the United States in on the same path with a huge number of families receiving government aid, be it food stamps, section 8 housing, welfare, medicaid, etc and a huge national debt and deficit.

The difference, America can print dollars. Americans still lose as their savings become worth less due to inflation. Then someone will come along and tell them they are idiots for having so much cash, "you should have invested that in the STOCK MARKET" also known as the easiest way to lose your money.

i dont see why anyone in the world WOULD WANT AUSTERITY?

why should some people have to live through it while others sit and make more money off of those who are suffering?

Because Spain has little to no industry. They have socialised themselves to death, similar to Greece. Know what they do well in Spain right now? They grow cannabis really really well.

Also, I can hate Krugman all i want and I'm pretty sure that makes me rational. Only an irrational person would think Krugman's ideas or intelligence is of any value. The man believes in manipulating people and markets in order to get the result he wants. It's ridiculous and you're ridiculous for pimping him. Economist lol what a joke title.

So that rich bankers & investors get their pound of flesh.

The Euro acts like the gold standard for debtor nations, driving a debt/deflation spiral.

The best time to be rich? When everybody else is broke, busted, in debt, unemployed & begging. That's when you really get to put the bone to 'em. Squirt!

You have no idea what you're talking about. Spain is highly diversified, and is the 12th largest economy in the world.

Manipulate markets? Should we leave that to the Mitt Romneys of the world or exert the power of democracy to limit their ability to manipulate?

If Libertopian fantasies weren't so dangerous, they'd be laughable.

Did I say anything was wrong with it? Nope, just using it as an example to show how little they are actually doing. Yes I don't know anything about Spain, their economy isn't in the shorter, they aren't exporting a LOT less than they were a decade ago. They don't have over twenty percent unemployment. Their industry is fine. Lol idiots. Spain is fucked, as bad as Greece or maybe worse because they are more prone to violence in Spain than in Greece.
