Hello,

I just put together this system:

Epox 8rda, AMD Athlon XP 1800+, MSI 64MB Geforce4 ti4200, Modem BLaster 56k, Maxtor 60GB HD (Primary), Samsung 40GB HD (Secondary), 256x2 PC2700 DDR Kingston Value, 48x CD-ROM and standard floppy in a 350 watt Enermax case.

Windows XP Pro is loaded on the system and every time I load up, the system finds the same video card over and over and over again. THe corner of the screen says adding new hardware VGA Controller, which turns into MSI Geforce. This happens literally about 20 times in the span of a minute. When I enter Control Panel sure enough, there are tons of instances of the Geforce and VGA Controller (depending on whether or not I decide to add drivers for the VGA Controller).

I am at a loss as to what to do. I was considering upgrading the BIOS but for some reason I can't figure out how to enter a pure DOS environment in WinXP Pro anymore.

Any suggestions guys?!

If you want to update the BIOS, format a blank floppy diskette, have Windows do a ScanDisk with bad-sector checking on the floppy, then download the BIOS zip file, unzip it, put the .BIN file on the floppy diskette, and reboot. Press Alt + F2 at the POST screen and wait while the BIOS updates.

It sounds to me like some kind of Windows problem and my first inclination would be to punt and do a full reformat and reinstall. EPoX recommends going in this order:

Install Windows
Install Windows service packs and stuff
Install nVidia's latest unified driver pack (currently 2.03)
