Hey guys.. im fixing a computer for a friend right now... hes a dj and needs his files. His HD got a nasty virus and it no longer boots and im not able to repair it. It needs a full reformat to work properly. The thing is.. he has his my documents folder files set to private and i cannot copy them to another hard drive because i cannot access them. I installed partition magic and made a fat32 partition... but how and where do i transfer these files over if i cannot access them?

i tried booting from the partition magic disk and it only shows A: and wont let me get to C:

any suggestions?

if he used XPs built-in encryption to "make it private" he is pretty well fvcked, and im pretty sure thats what setting it to private does. search/question the OS forum about similar situations. the only thing i can think that *might* work is to repair the XP install instead of format/reinstall if you have the OS disc/key but im not certain that would fix the problems and allow access

i tried to repair... it wont boot up into anything after the cd installs the files... i need to format the whole thing.

i dont think the files are encrypted.. they arent green colored... i think his username just had his files on private.

Hacka, try this:

1) on your computer that you're using as the "rescue" computer, reboot into Safe Mode

2) in Safe Mode, go to the \Documents and Settings folder on his hard drive and right-click his profile folder. Choose Properties and the Properties panel will appear.

3) On the Properties panel, click the Security tab. pic to refer to from here onward :camera:

4) On the Security tab, click the Advanced button and the Advanced panel opens. Go to the Owner tab.

5) on the Owner tab, reassign Ownership to the Administrators group on the computer you're using. Make sure to mark the checkbox so it applies to subfolders and stuff, then hit Apply.

6) take a snack break :D while it applies the change to everything in his profile.

7) reboot into normal Windows. Before proceeding further, use a top-notch antivirus software to scan his folder for malware. Preferably use several; the F-Secure online scanner plus TrendMicro HouseCall plus the manual McAfee beta scanner (scroll down page halfway for instructions, you can skip using Safe Mode With Command Prompt in this case).

That is not what the privacy setting does, it simply enables the use of NTFS permissions.

Do you have either of these available:

1) a computer with Windows 2000 Pro

or

2) a computer with Windows XP Professional Edition

If so, put the drive into that computer. On Win2000 you don't need to use Safe Mode, just follow steps 3 through 5.

On WinXP Pro, either start it in Safe Mode, or go to My Computer, click Tools > Folder Options, hit the View tab and uncheck Use Simple File Sharing (is that the right name? I'm on Vista) at the bottom of the list. Then do steps 3 through 5.

Any good?

"I made lots of friends" ROFL.

I was just about to help but then I scrolled down through once to see what others had told you first and came across this jewel. Too funny.
