Huge patch coming for Dawn of War 2

Although I'm a huge fan of the game in it's current state, a lot of people in the community believe that DoW2 was released incomplete, and the smallish patches so far have got the community rather irate. Well Relic has finally released some information regarding the upcoming 1.4 patch, and it looks pretty damn sweet, I must say.

They calling it the "There is Only War" update, here's a link to Relic's blog entry on the patch. Included are 8 sweet looking maps, some really cool sounding observer modes, huge balance changes (thank god!) and new unit upgrades.

GameReplays.org has an interview with a guy who got to play the new version and some footage of it in action. Unfortunately that video won't play on my PC for some reason (IE8 and Chrome can't seem to find it) and the interview is hardly worth reading in my opinion, no real information in it.

So for those of you that got bored with the balance issues and pathing bugs, I hope to see you back in the game soon. I really hope this gives the multiplayer community a much-needed shot in the arm.

I wished DoW2 was an actual sequel instead of following what CoH is. No base building in a RTS game = no buy from me. Not that anyone cares what I buy...

I think the video is borked. I even downloaded it (flv file) and MPC can't render it.

DoW2 was the biggest mix of win/fail ever.

I just want new SP content because I couldnt care less about the MP stuff. Please give us a decent story without borked ideals and overpowered stupidities.

Got 2 for $47.23 shipped on ebay. :D

I haven't played this in a while though, I like to play Eldar but IMO there are balance issues that work against them. It's much easier for me to win as Space Marine but also not as fun.
I'm looking forward to this big patch, I hope they give Eldar some decent lower tier anti-vehicle abilities.

Funny how perspectives are different. I wished DoW2 had more closely followed what CoH is. I felt that it didn't (and it didn't follow DoW1 either). And there was base building in CoH.

I didn't liked it, the open multi-plater beta on Steam and the official demo both convinced me to stay away from it.

DoW2 would have been a complete 10 in my book if they had let us play more than one race in SP, or at least included more than a dozen missions before you can finish the storyline.

More variety in choosing stats would have been nice. They pretend to let you choose how to customize your units.. but in reality there is only one way, unless you like utter and complete failure during your missions. Would be nice to choose what hero unit you want to use during SP campaign as well. Would be nice to play as a Librarian, too.

They practically completed disregarded the Kronus expansion. Best DoW game to hit the shelves and they didnt take a single thing from that game onboard DoW2.

They made an utter half-ass attempt to give you some freedom in choosing where to attack, and region bonuses during SP. Its a completely linear and scripted SP campaign with the illusion of freedom.

Still, i did enjoy MP for quite some time though. Very fun.

What's with the hate on the base building (or lack there of)

I actually don't think I can play and enjoy another traditional RTS after playing DOW2, it was so fucking awesome

I for one am super excited about the update, even though I hardly play any multiplayer on this sans coop campaign mode

Some seller in India. The seller was nice enough to send me the CD-Keys before shipping the games after I asked him/her. Then I just put the keys in Steam and started playing. I received the physical games like 4 weeks later.

I am glad they got rid of the base building, I can't imagine going back to the first DoW. Doing the same thing the beginning of every match gets very tedious.

That's what made Dawn of War so great. You could actually build a base and commission troops and vehicles as needed. It made the game play more strategic as you actually had to worry about your base along with your troops instead of the squad-based approach DOW2 took.

I like DOW2 for what it took from DOW and improved upon such as more detailed units and individualized upgrades, but as far as the lack of buildings and huge troop deployments, I was very disappointed that they weren't included.

The game has basically just become COH in the 40th millennium...

DoW2 was dissapointing to me, glad i didnt buy it. Ive still got my beloved company of heros anyway :) It has base building but its still a far cry from traditional repetitive c&c style base building, theres only like 5 buildings and an HQ in CoH.

since they haven't patched steam out of it yet, I'll wait until the super gold platinum deluxe package is on sale.

Sad... I love the WH40k universe and used to play MP all the time, but it got boring so quickly. The wargear unlocks are a cute idea, but the implementation was shoddy (as were so many other things, both SP and MP). It was definitely released too soon - the framework was there but the content (and solid, fresh gameplay) was not.

DoW2 was great...just wish it had more single player missions. I could care less about MP for it, so this patch will probably not do me any good.

No amount of patching will save em now. Relic really fed-up the game. It's not even a shadow of what it was now. This is not even DOW. This... Is some sort of shitty game that tries to imitate CoH and fails miserably. The original DOW was PERFECT. The epic music... The gameplay... The quotes.. The list goes on and on. all they had to do was improve on what was already done right. But no.. they had to just take everything and trash it. what a damn shame.

They took the game in the right direction. No base building, smaller squads and cover were what the doctor ordered...

Removing races and leaving the game as bare bones as it can get... was not.

Good ideas, bad execution. Very unlike Relic afterall, this must be their "worst game to date" and its pretty darn good in its own right.

I feel exactly the same, the game is just terrible if you even had any sort of appreciation for the first title.

Relic's stock with me has really dropped after DOW2 and that last COH "expansion", both are complete turds.

I don't know what the hell you guys are talking about. They are different games but 2 is just a true to the lore and the atmosphere as 1 is and besides that it's a very fun game in it's own right. Repetitive towards the end, but that's just because I was trying to reach lvl 20 with all the squad leaders. And i'll agree the SP was sort of linear but man it's stylish. Quality game.

The only issue i had with 2's MP is the lack of maps. Otherwise it was a blast, the cover mechanic is awesome. I'll probably come back after this update.

Side note: can't wait to see Genestealers :)

Right, but under all the polish, it's pretty damn vacuous. You end up with a hybrid that lacks the depth of either an RPG or an RTS. I know what they were trying to do and I would have killed the idea before it got started. Not only is it not groundbreaking but it's alienated fans of the series, so double fail.

Yes it's pretty and stable, but it's not fun to play, unless you approach it strictly for phat lewts and there's much better games for that.

You may wish to try the special Campaign of WC3 TFT with the half-orc/half-ogre person.

In my opinion, if DoW 2 was more like that, it would have been full of win. Huge maps, random side quest type areas with insane stuff. You could have taken a handful of Marines around numerous maps in huge missions.

With DoW2, they captured lore great when they made Space Marines into the superhuman and brutal warmachines that they are individually but failed to throw in the monumental battles which Warhammer 40k is really about. Many many (repeat many several times) enemies and a handful of marines all in one location for some serious gut grinding.

Screw the patch.

Give me an expansion!! :)

I cant wait until they release one that lets you play either the Eldar, Orks, or Tyranids in SP. I'd really like to try the Eldar outside of MP :)
