Huge heatsink, do I need a fan?

First, let me apologize for any ignorance I may be showing

I recently won a P4 2.4Ghz Processor from a Dell give-away, the chip says:

2.40GHz/512/800
SL6WF Phillipines
7324A062

With it came a pretty big heatsink: 25mm L x 20mm W x 21mm H

But that was it, no fan and no spot on the heatsink for a fan. So do I need to buy a seperate CPU Fan? If so, what do you recommend? If I don't need to by a CPU fan, what do you recommend I do for cooling?

Best to put a fan on just to be on the safe side, even a small 40mm fan would be better than nothing.

25CM? That's almost 10 inches long! If you mean mm, that's only about an inch which is tiny.

Dell uses a fan shroud with many of it's cases. The fan is mounted on the back of the case, and draws warm air away from the processor with the shroud. I would try ordering an Intel heatsink with built in fan. Don't use your present heatsink without a fan. It will overheat. Newegg sometimes sells refurbished p4 heatsinks for only $5 shipped. I got one of the newer copper ones. The fan runs noisier on them, so I slowed it down with a zalman "fan mate 1", about $5 at Frys and a little more when ordered online (with shipping).

Get a fan, there are many good ones out there.

What you can do is buy a Zalman FB123 which is the fan and bracket used with the Zalman flower heatsinks. It's 92mm fan that can be suspended on top of your heatsink.
