Hub/Switch in my TV Stand Good or bad idea?

I currently have 4 Cat5e cables run to my entertainment center (TV/Component Stand) as my Blu-Ray Disc Player, Xbox 360, and my HTPC need a network connection, and I have an extra for when I test computer for people as I am Mr. Fix it (For Family Only:'() anyway my main router is a Netgear WNR-3500 I was thinking of adding a Network Hub/Switch to my TV Center anyway my routers ports are all used and this would give me 4 more usable ports. The HTPC is the only one that absoulutly needs a Gigabit connection the other two (Or three on the occasion that I am working on another computer) only need a 100MB connection. I am just worried that it will slow down my HTPC file transfers (Usually big video files to my main computer)
So is this an unheard of idea or should I go for it?
Thanks

Gigabit switches can be had for fairly cheap already. For what you're doing I wouldn't hesitate to do it. Running all those Cat 5 cables in to your tv stand must be quite the mess. 🙂

yeah it was quite the mess
I got the switch and I don't notice any slowdowns at all (Maybe even a little faster)

I know the specs for the Ethernet cables is Max of 100M (328.083FT) but is there a Minimum Length? I know Monoprice sells cables as short as 0.5FT but is there an actual Minimum I should use?

yeah i've used shorter cables but it is out of spec. that doesn't mean it won't work. cables > 100m will work too but they sell really short loops at monoprice iirc.

all was well for awhile but now it is super slow unless the last port is active (Which it almost never is a my BD player drops the connection when I turn it off) I am using this switch to add more ports to my router and to simplify my wiring scheme.
I also edit video and that needs a lot of bandwidth (The video is stored on the HTPC and I edit it using my main computer) is there a way to fix this? or should I RMA my switch?
I tried power cycling all of my network devices to no help
