ok.. this is a weird setup.

there is a cable modem connected to a hub..(3 ip addresses leased)

i want to add wireless but i don't (can't for specific reasons) change the settings on the laptops.. 2 are running xp one is running win98.. they are connected to the hub via cat5.

can i plug the router into the hub and use wireless of that connection while leaving the other 2 laptos connected directly to the hub?

i tried the setup and can't get it to work. is it possible?

``````````````hub ----> computer 2
The solution depends on your External IPs and how the Routing to the current computers is Done.
If you have multiple External IPs it is not a problem.
ok.. well i have tried it and can't get it running... the router works seperately and so does the hub.. when why i try the setup above i can't get it going.. there are three external IP's at least which i know for sure .
are there any settings that should be changed as opposed to when the router is connected directly to the modem?
Dynamic IPs or Static?
Router has to be set accordingly.
As well as a possible MAC Cloning.
Have you tried this:
modem -> hub -> comp 1 (1st dynamic IP)
hub -> comp 2 (2nd dynamic IP)
hub -> wireless (3rd IP and also set as DHCP server) -> comp 3 (IP from DHCP server)
You say you have 3 IP's available but the wireless router is going to take one leaving your 3rd computer out in the cold. By running the wireless as a DHCP server it would allow your 3rd computer to work like the rest.
Does this help?
cant the wireless router be turned into a wireless access point/bridge at some point?
Yeah, it can be used as a Gateway Fixed Access Point.
Link to: Using a Wireless Cable/DSL Router as a Switch with an Access Point
However in this situation the IPs are External.
but if the wirless router is behind the wired router(which has a dhcp running) then they are really internal ips and this would work out, right?
question:
from the hub to the router do i connect it to the WAN port of the router? or just a lan port?
thanks again
no, he wants to use the router to route, plug it into the WAN port not the LAN port.
y not just invest into a wireless router with 4 port switch. Life will be much easier. Unless you are hosting a website on your laptops and need to retain the IPs, if thats the case use one of those free dynamic ISP services thats out there.
