Htpc??????

I am going to build my boss a htpc, I would like to start by getting info on dlp.

Would a htpc run good on a dlp?
Are the projectors nice to watch?
Can games be played on them?
Can they be used on a wall instead a screen, how good is the picture?
What is the good bang for buck dlp?

The htpc will be used for light gamming, tivo, internet browsing, and need to have tv tuner and fm tuner, 7.1 would be nice.

Is the xp media center the way to go? He and his wife are not to pc literate. Just want a single remote to handle all this!

I am more than happy to give as much info as it takes to get help, thanx chris!

Yeah, it should work fine.
Yes. (take him to look at some and see if he notices rainbow effect)
Yes.
Yes, that's what I'm using. http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/YOyoYOhowsDAjello/jello1.JPG
I have an Infocus 4805 that recently was going for $499 refurbished on Black Friday. Normally goes for under $1000 new.

An ED projector would be great for everything except internet browsing. In general I don't really like browsing on the projector, it just feels odd. Plus at 854x480, it's not exactly a great resolution for web pages. A 720p DLP projector would work well for that, but it's going to be a lot more expensive.

The big thing about projectors is that you need a light controlled room. Unless you can get the room almost totally dark, a projector isn't going to look great.

If you have the light controlled area though, you can't beat a projector for a huge screen on a budget.

For the sound, 5.1 vs 7.1 isn't a big deal. It's more a matter of quality than having two more surround speakers (pick a better 5.1 set over a lesser 7.1 set I mean).

Do they have a budget in mind?

How dark does the room have to be? your pic looks good, the setup will be in basement, so controlling light isnt too hard. But I am sure he doesnt wanna be in the dark all the time.

I figured 1000-1500 for the projector, he has a devider in his basement that is perfect for a projector. What do you do paint the wall with certain paint, is the screen a better picture all around?

As far as the webbrowsing part, I would just be concerned in being able to read the words. When I hook my pc up to my tv I cannot see the words, due to it being so blurry. Do these dlp support high def?

Thanx for the help

Well, the darker the better.
That pic was taken in the afternoon on a bright day, but I blocked the windows up.
A basement should work very well. We got room darkening shades for our livingroom and it looks very good even with a bit of light leaking through from various places.

On my white wall right now it looks very good. There are special paint mixtures you can get that will be better. Check out the projector area of AVSforum for tons of info.

My projector looks best when you feed is a 480p signal from the computer, but it's still very readable with a 720p signal given and scaled to the native res.
My DLP is ED not HD, but there are certainly HD DLPs out there. HD LCDs are generally more affordable.
