htpc xp remote control help, what software?

i just built a htpc with xp on it i have a windows remotr but what software do i need to use it? id love to be able to play movies and pause ff ...ect but i cannot figure out what software to use. i currently use vlc media player to play my movies {its the only player i found to work on all formats} please help im going nuts at this point

Buying xp media edition is to costly at this point.

amd 754 3400
x800xl video
1 gig ram
