HTPC / Vista Media Center / TV-as-Display issues

Here is my issue.
When I turn off the TV, regardless of whether I leave the Media Center running or put it to sleep, I get a black screen after turning the TV back on. The only solution to the problem is to put the media center to sleep, turn the TV on while the Media Center is in standby and the wake the media center. Then - after some waiting - it might show an image again.

Why can't the @#$@!#$%#@ machine just show an image on the TV when it is on?
I have disabled every power manegement feature I could fine for turning the display off or turning it black.

Here's my setup:

PC with Vista Ultimate running as Media Center
nice Panasonic LCD HDTV hooked up to the Media Center

Connection between HTPC and TV:
HTPC DVI port => DVI to HDMI cable => TV HDMI port

There are plenty of problems like that with tvs. Usually updating graphics driver, forcing default for your tv resolution/refresh or getting refresh off the standard by 1-2 Hz helps. First just try another DVI port on your card if you have any.

What video card do you have? I had what sounds to be the same problem except that I'm using an HDMI switcher in between the pc and tv. I ended up using the ATI Omega drivers as my HDMI switcher company recommended them because they won't "go black" and not respond. Have you tried this yet?

It's a standard ATI Radeon x300 card.
Nothing fancy and sadly only one DVI port.

What drives me up the wall too is that the Vista drivers screw up the resolution.
I know the native resolution of the LCD TV but that looks horrible ... so I am forced to use some other resolution that has a slight overscan.

Try lowering refresh by a few Hz and forcing native in CCC ? common problem with ATI pre 3??? cards. I assume you also cannot see your bios screen via dvi or seeing it after a huge delay. Refresh change would not fix it if so ? to get to the bios you would need to use rgb.

And it works perfectly in XP?

I've had this problem in windows XP with my 42" plasma TV. The native resolutions setting actually gives a slight overscan as well. In the graphics card settings (7600GT) I can squish the screen to fit, but then some of the pixels look distorted. It looks fine for video, but reading text hurts my eyes badly.

I gave up. Now if I want to watch something on the TV I just use my PS3 as a media center extender.

I tried setting the native resolution in CCC and it looks horrible ... 🙁
Maybe changing the Hz helps. Thank you for the tip.

BTW - Yes. I cannot see the Bios via DVI only via the cards S-Video out.
