i am going to build an htpc for my neighbor, but i dont know too much about the software options. as far as ease to use and functionality what is the best choice... if all else i will just use mce 05, but i wanted to get your opinions first.
btw i am planing on getting a a64 2800+, epox nf3 mobo, 512 corsair valueram, 200gig seagate, nec 3520a, pvr 150, and a 9600pro. as for a case im looking at a couple of the silverstone cases but am undecided.

my neighbors are older and not the most computer literate, so it needs to be something they can pick up without too much effort.

SageTV makes for a very convincing TiVo-a-like. There's a ton of functionality and customizablility to it as well. Luckily, all of that is buried and doesn't complicate the UI in the least.

if it's for a friend/neighbor/cousin/coworker and they don't know jack about computers, then you are by default TECH SUPPORT for as long as they have the system. that being the case pick up a copy of Media Center 2005. it will make your life easier.

HTPC can mean many things to many people. Aside from your mention of the PVR150, are we talking more than TiVo-like video recording, say, with music (ripping/compressing/archiving/streaming) and/or digital photos? What about remote control from another PC via home LAN or the Internet? Occasionally DVD playback? What kind of display?

As kama just mentioned, MCE 2005 may be your best bet because "rely" on Microsoft. Other tools may have better features, but it may not cross all of the needed domains. Each program out there has its niche.
