I am looking for a video card for my HTPC. I also hope to do a little light gaming on it: Street Fighter / Final Fantasy 7 & 8 etc. I have narrowed it down to these two:

GeForce GT 740 with 1GB of DDR5

or

GeForce GT 740 with 2GB of DDR3

newegg comparison

Why choose the faster RAM over the capacity? This will be for a 1080p TV.

GDDR5...

in my opinion this GPU (GK107) is not really fast enough to really show the advantages of more vram (over 1GB) most of the time, specially if you cut the memory bandwidth in half going with DDR3, while the faster memory will have an obvious effect most of the time.

The 750ti's have been down to $110 in the hot deals forums. I'd bump up to that if you are going to do some gaming.

At the very least I'd suggest a GTX 750, unless the price is a problem. The 750 series are both more powerful and more power-efficient than the new 740s. (Which are basically rebadges.)

Thanks for telling me! I got an open box 750 TI on newegg with the $15 google credit. Total came out to $93. 100% worth it.
