I am looking at buying a Gigabyte Brix with an i3 or an AMD (when it is released) CPU. The i3 model cost $300, plus the cost of a mSata drive, and some RAM. It's pretty expensive. About $350 in total. I am wondering if buying the GB Brix is worth it, or should I build a HTPC?

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
Videos, movies and light gaming.
2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread
$300
3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
US
4. IF you're buying parts OUTSIDE the US, please post a link to the vendor you'll be buying from.
We can't be expected to scour the internet on your behalf, chasing down deals in your specific country... Again, help us, help YOU.
Using PCPartPicker, I like Amazon.
5. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.
N/A
6. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
N/A
7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
I am looking at this board for an A4-4000 The board has an OC Genie feature, which automatically OCs the CPU.
8. What resolution, not monitor size, will you be using?
Don't have exact specs on my Panasonic TV now, I'm not at my home.
9. WHEN do you plan to buy the parts?
Note that it is usually not cost or time effective to choose your build more than a month before you actually plan to be using it.
In about a month.
X. Do you need to purchase any software to go with the system, such as Windows or Blu Ray playback software?
No, I'm going to use Linux.

Other Notes:
Build needs wifi adapter.

How are you getting mSATA SSD plus RAM for $50? Also, shouldn't the budget for a self-built machine be the same?

Here's a build using IGP:

AMD A6-5400K $70
MSI FM2-A75IA-E53 $90
DDR3 1600 4GB $24
Sandisk 64GB SSD $65
Antec ISK 300-150 $80
Total: $329

That gets you a reasonable IGP, SSD, and mini-ITX case. You can add another DIMM to get better gaming performance (dual-channel memory).

The AMD GB Brix (when they come out) will be cheaper, I was hoping they would be around $200-$250, but I think I will build, thanks for the advice for the build!
