HTML: favicon.ico help

Programming? I guess this forum is where this question goes. This is to anyone who has experience putting a favorite ion on to a website, favicon.ico.

I'm doing a webpage, and I place my 16x16 .ico file into the root directory of my website, but IE never seems to recognize the favicon.ico file. I'm even downloaded favicons that are in use on website, and put those into my directory just to see if it will recognize it, and it won't. What am I doing wrong? A couple websites I've looked at say that if it isn't being recognized, check to see whether your web hosting server supports favicon.ico, but I'm just creating the website on my hard drive, then later uploading it. I've also tried it on my university's web server and it won't work there either.

Did you already have the site bookmarked?
What's the site, you should ask other people to check.

Good idea... It's temporary site is... www.people.ku.edu/~dgath/sk/

That isn't the favicon.ico I created, but one I downloaded from another site, so it should work.

Permissions? Everything looks fine. I added the bookmark after the icon was on the site and refreshed, and nothing.

So let me know if anyone can get the icon.

On a side note, it's a website I'm doing for my girlfriends sorority. My first public site so any suggestions, lemme have 'em. It's really rough though, probably about 20% done.
