HTC PPC6800

It has come time to replace my phone that I have had for 2 and a half years, and I am thinking of getting a smartphone. I go through US Cellular, and the options out here in the sticks where I live are not as plentiful as they are elsewhere.

I am looking at this phone here -

I can get it for $250 after rebate, which isnt to terrible since the stanard phone I want comes pretty close. This seemed to be the nicest smart phone they had in stock, and I do like the slide out keyboard function.

Anyone like/dislike theirs?

Also, can you use SDHC memory cards with this phone?

I love mine. Depending on what youre coming from, the size take a little getting used to, but man what a powerhouse! PPC stands for pocket PC and thats pretty accurate. I have moved from paper calendar and address book to my 6800. It holds a TON of info including personal notes. It backs up to active sync and outlook as well.

It has a neat function called notes, which gives you a blank screen to use stylus like a pen to write yourself notes. Handy in quick situations.

Gaming is good also if you need something to pass the time. As far as customization...wow. Well, it IS WM OS so, very much so.

If its updated to WM 6.1 you get threaded email and SMS also. GPS/Google Maps works flawlessly also.

Touchscreen is slick and accurate.

What I dont like: battery life kinda sucks, but I solved that with an extended battery.
Unless you get a custom homepage/theme many operations require the stylus instead of the finger.
Stylus is easy to forget somewhere lol. I remedied that by buying a 3 pack off ebay for 8 bucks.

There isnt much I dont like. Its a solid phone.

edit: To answer your question, SD cards up to (I think) 8 gigs. Also bluetooth setup is very simple. I loaded Core Player and use it as an IPod with stereo bluetooth headset.

I am going to be coming from a motorola RAZR v3c that I have had pretty much since they came out in my area, so it will take some getting used to as far as size.

I will have to get me one of those extended batteries as well, it doesn't look like they are expensive at all.

What kind of memory card do you use in yours, if any at all? I was wanting to pick up an 8gig microSDHC card, but it seems some people can make it work, and some people cant.

I use a san disk like this: *****/sandisk-8gb-microsd-sdhc-memory-card.html no issues at all.

Take it slow. Its alot to learn. Google "mogul users" and there are alot of forums for us. If you dont spend a little time learning you WILL get frustrated. In your case youre going from an abacus to a PC lol

A good place to start is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/ .....scroll about 3/4 down to "Titan" section (thats the official name) and also in the first section "Development and Hacking" to get an idea of different themes. Its pretty amazing.

I looooooooooooooooove the titan, but to be quite honest, a successor is on the way soon. The 6800 is a little limited by a small~ish amount of RAM and a qvga display, whereas the next iteration will pack 4x the ram and VGA screen.
This may not matter to you, but if you need a phone right now I can't recommend anything over this little guy.

Touch Pro DOES look nice, but as with any new device....it looks like the end all be all till its released. We dont know its limitations yet, and it WILL have them Remember the iPhone 3g and Instinct launch? hehe

My advice, as with PC products, never wait for the next big thing even its around the corner. You will never buy The titan is solid and proven Cant go wrong.

That is what I am thinking as well - I can wait forever since something better is always around the corner.

I did ask the US Cellular guys about the Touch Pro, and they say they wont have them around here (CDMA only) for quite a while at least. I could look at different carriers, but I have been using US Cellular since the bag phone days, and they have always had great service. Compared to my work cell (a verizon phone), I get much better service in most of the rural communities around here (some areas where the verizon wireless phone wont work at all, but I get full bars on my US cellular phone). I figure they can keep my business because of that, even though there are is a MUCH larger selection of phones at the Verizon store. The fanciest phone in the world is no good if the service doesnt work well.

It is good to hear that people like this phone, since I know no one that owns one of these (most people in my office have Treo's or blackberrys).

I love mine. I live in a rural area as well, and though not as good as my old cdma nokias, its rf performance is up there. Its too bad you cant get the touch pro. Ill be upgrading my 6800 to a touch pro when Alltel releases it in Oct.

Mine is fantastic. Just make sure to check through ppcgeeks and xda-developers for some better software. There are free backups solutions, GPS solutions, better GUI's, etc. On top of that, slingbox........

I ended up getting an HTC Touch today, instead of the Mogul. I just liked the smaller size, and what looked to me to be a better screen - even though I lost the qwerty keyboard and the wifi capability. The phone was a bit cheaper too, which helped the decision.


I am worried about the web searching on this smartphone though...

Cool beans! The Touch is a great phone also. Probably a better PDA phone than the Mogul coming from a flip

My advice...google "htc touch forums" and find an active one for that phone. Join and read read read. Thats how you'll learn the nuances of it. And, just like the Mogul, it is VERY customizable. Again, check out xda developer's forum. Google knows the address.

Opera runs like sh!t on the 6800. There's just not enough memory.

Oh, and FYI the HTC Touch Diamond will be out soon. Very soon.

Yeah, I live in an area where CDMA is king, and US cellular only gets phones when they have been out for at least a year or so. They have only been offering the touch for about 2 weeks now, it is their newest phone.

I personally would not. I used to work for US Cellular, and we had nothing but complaints about the quality of the smartphones.
