HTC EVO 4G training begins at Sprint, requires special plan

Actually, I'm not even sure really. The email spam I just got from sprint says Business only but Engadget is reporting no? Needs to be cleared up.

OK, now that the Sprint Evo 4G pricing is official and all, let's break it down, all official-like.

$199 for the phone, after the usual two-year contract.
$69.99 a month for the Everything Data plan.
$10 a month if you want the 4G WiMax service. That's optional.
$29 a month if you wan the WiFi hotspot service. And that will serve up to eight devices. This is optional, too.

The good news: No data caps, so far as Sprint knows at this point. (That's for 3G and 4G.)

So it sounds like both 4G and the Hot Spot are both optional features.

The email says:

Everything Data Plans starting at $70 or Business Data plans starting at $60, plus $10/mo.

The location of that comma is key.

I'm not terribly upset about the extra $10 a month... I was considering going for the regular plan over the EPRP just to get Premiere (which requires a plan of 70/mo IIRC), but i can add the $10 onto the EPRP plan to get that same price.

It's not optional, it's a requirement.

You must pay the extra $10/month if you buy the EVO. It doesn't matter if you only want 3G service with the phone, you will be billed for an extra $10/month for 4G service on top of whatever data and voice plan you pick.

More Detail on the Sprint EVO 4G $10/Month Premium Data Charge
There have been a TON of questions about this monthly Premium Data charge. I hope this will clear things up.

If you buy the Sprint 4G EVO, you have to pay this $10 charge each month. This is specific to the device. It's not related to whether you are using 3G or 4G. It is required if you have the phone.

Because the phone has a faster processor, a huge 4.3 inch screen and an 8 megapixel camcorder/camera, we expect you will be using a lot more data than you would with our other devices. These features will give you capabilities that have previously never been available on a wireless device and we think they provide a premium experience. (Remember, this is the world's first 3G/4G Android phone.)

Separately, some have asked about the $29 a month hotspot charge. (You can connect up to 8 WiFi-enabled devices to one EVO if you pay that monthly charge -- but this is optional.)

I hope this clears things up. While some don't like it, even with these charges, we're still cheaper than AT&T and Verizon, who's 4G networks exist on some beautifully designed PowerPoint slides. ;-)

Well that sucks, no Evo for me

Well I wasn't planning on switching to sprint just to get this phone, but to me the $10 surcharge isn't too egregious, assuming that you get really good 4G reception in your home city.

i don't understand the obsession with putting useless FM radio in things that have gb after gb of space for music that i select.
how do you expose yourself to new music if you're only ever listening to the same mp3's over and over again?

I love my MP3 player for long distances and when I'm driving in/out of broadcast areas, but I still listen to the radio a ton.

Honestly, with streaming Internet music, who needs FM/AM tuners nowadays.

Well damm, I was wrong.
They are indeed tacking on +$10 if you want the EVO.
If you're in a 4G area, $10 isn't too bad but if you're not, its really bad marketing.
I hope Sprint rethink this.
These guys have been bleeding customers for a few years now and finally they get a phone that can add some blood back to the company.
Then they do something stupid like this.
The most important issue for them should be adding subscribers....period.
This is a fail proof phone for them to do it but the extra $10 is gonna scare alot of people off.
Like I said, $10 for 4G is not a big deal but its a big deal for the rest that doesn't get 4G.
No wonder Sprint is laggging way behing as the 3rd carrier.
Bad marketing..(This is from a long time former Sprint customer.)

Considering there's no 4g within about 400 miles of me I'm inclined to say FU sprint.

But my only other option is a droid incredible for $90/mo so it's still less money for a better phone with slightly worse 3g... but I think it's still worth it

This is pretty much the same as when AT&T upped the price of their data plan for the iPhone when the 3G came out.

Kinda sucks but on the other hand, Sprint is still cheaper with the extra charge than Verizon.

All I have to say is Sprint better market the hell out of this thing. It's going to be the best phone on the market, PERIOD. Make sure everyone knows that!

This. Pay an extra $120/year for the privilege of having this phone AFTER buying it is a big 'no no' in my book. Sprint = Stupid.

Assuming you judge "best" by specs alone...unfortunately for you some people would never consider a phone that lacks a physical keyboard, so you can go ahead and delete "PERIOD"

This is not quite true as ATT started charging $30 data for all so called smartphone afterward.
What Sprint is doing is just for the EVO, no other phone.
Overall, its still cheaper than the comparable ATT and Verizon but Sprint isn't in the position to be on apr with those 2.
Sprint needs to create a obvious edge over these 2 and EVO+their current plan would have added alot of new subscribers.
I think ALOT of people will not switch because of the added $10.

Even though Sprint's plans are still cheaper with the $10 fee, in my book this still doesn't make it right.

Its not about being able to afford $10, its about being forced to pay for something for nothing. Most people cannot use 4G so you're basically throwing $10 away. Sprint is being incredibly stupid by making this move. They have just acquired the King of Android phones and instead of seizing the moment to gain as many subscribers as they can, they are seizing your wallet.

Sprint needs to wake up and realize that they aren't the #1 carrier, they don't have the luxury of charging people an extra fee. They just sabotaged their one opportunity to compete with Verizon/ATT.

I think Sprint's trying to market the $10 a something that isn't just for 4G. They claim this is for features like the video chatting and the larger screen (which will lead to more data usage).

I think most people would be okay with the extra $10 if it was just for 4G and optional, but this way seems a little shady (however I can deal with it).

Most geeks like us don't mind the $10 as we know its still cheaper than the comparable ATT and verizon.
For the normal folks trying to sign up and being told there is a $10 surcharge for the EVO will be a turn off.

sprint is desperate because people are leaving them in droves. they advertise 4g like crazy where i live, but if you actually go in their stores and ask them about it, they say they dont know when it will be available but they are hoping sometime later this year
