I just got off a chat on their site, Candice is my wife's name
2:49:36 PM : Jack K: Hi

2:49:56 PM : Jack K: May I have the details of your concern
?

2:50:01 PM : Candice: i haave a question about the evo

2:50:26 PM : Candice: i want to get it but have readonline that you have to pay a 10 dollar premium just for having the phone? is this true?

2:50:36 PM : Candice: i have an employee referal everything plan

2:50:46 PM : Candice: family unlimited

2:51:01 PM : Jack K: Let me explain.

2:51:51 PM : Jack K: The HTC EVO is compatible with the data plans only.

2:52:08 PM : Candice: i have data on mine

2:52:24 PM : Candice: 109/month for two lines, two blackberries now

2:52:36 PM : Jack K: A $10 Premium Data Fee will apply, allowing customers to take advantage of all that HTC EVO 4G can do.

2:52:46 PM : Candice: i dont have 4g in my area

2:52:56 PM : Jack K: Think of this charge as the price for paying for a first-class seat on an airplane. The rich data experience that comes with EVO ownership puts users in a class by themselves.

2:53:01 PM : Candice: that is as bad as att charging 3g pricing where they only have edge

2:53:49 PM : Candice: is this fee going to apply to all future sprint smart phones?

2:54:27 PM : Jack K: This Fee is available only for the HTC EVO.

2:54:39 PM : Candice: for now

2:55:01 PM : Candice: in the future phones will be better than the evo, what will be the reasoning for having that fee on outdated hardware

2:55:27 PM : Candice: that is why i would wager it will be a new fee standard on all sprint smartphones

2:56:37 PM : Candice: well i suppose i will pass on it, i hope others do as well and it makes sprint reconsider

2:57:01 PM : Jack K: This fee is applicable with the HTC EVO only.

2:57:05 PM : Candice: i really like sprint but this is a ridiculous move

2:57:38 PM : Candice: but when the evo has been surpassed buy phones that do all this does and more there will be justification to have that fee on those devices as well

2:57:52 PM : Candice: it oly makes logical sense going by sprints reasoning for the fee on the evo

2:58:39 PM : Candice: ok well thanks

2:59:53 PM : Jack K: Premium Data Charge = $10*

Richer data experience with an advanced processor, 3G/4G capable and half off the Mobile Broadband service plan

Come on guys. While, yes, it's disappointing that the plan will be $10 more than we expected, it's still cheaper than any other plan, especially with EPRP.

Though, if you can worm a discount out of them, more power to you.

lol...really? That's kind of a lame attempt at an excuse.

Copy and paste is a wonderful thing.

So why did you have to spout all your rhetoric and theories at him? I can see if all you wanted to do was ask if the $10 surcharge applies to EPRP in addition to Everything Data plans. And I agree with you that it's likely the extra $10 will be tacked onto more and more phones in the future until it becomes standard. But what does the guy at the other end of that chat know about that? He might even agree with you but it's not like he can say anything.

I'm not trying to convince, a monkey would know it's bad.

You act like Sprint owes us a $25 or $30 discount from other carriers. Y'know, at some point they need to turn a profit.

If all you're doing is working the refs for a discount, fine, but if you honestly think you're entitled to that huge price differential, you should get a grip. $15 or $20 below all the other carriers is still pretty damn good.

Obviously spouting off to a low level customer service rep that he thinks this will apply to future Sprint smartphones too is going to change things. I'll bet Jack K immediately logged off and drove to Dan Hesse's office to demand a change!

Uh... the guy obviously pasted in something written by someone in marketing.

Oh, and go fuck yourself.

Dude, chill out.

I don't see how the phrase being coined by marketing as opposed to some CSR makes it any less ridiculous. In fact, it makes it even worse since that almost certainly means a committee of people spent hours coming up with that rationale lol.

Sure, it's boilerplate.

The real reason for the $10 fee is that sprint has been in pretty bad financial trouble lately and has spent a bunch of money in upgrading to WiMax. They can't turn their financials around and still charge their cheap cheap plans, so they add this fee to amortize their WiMax costs. But they can't tell the customer that, they have to spin it as good for the customer. Hence, boilerplate.
