I've had my HTC Desire since early last year, and I'm only a couple of months away from being able to upgrade on my contract. I don't keep up with phones really, so I'm wondering if anyone can suggest a worthwhile replacement.

To be honest I don't use a lot of the phone's capabilities - my main uses are web browsing, Facebook, Google Maps, downloading and playing podcasts. I don't play games or have a bazillion apps, so I'm not super fussed about a faster processor or GPU. I'm not heavily invested in the Android platform really and would consider changing to something else.

I love the Desire's big high-res screen and wouldn't want a lesser display. The main thing I'd honestly like is enough battery life to not have to worry so much about using the damn thing. They seem to keep making faster and more power-hungry phones, when all I really want is the same phone with a 7 day battery life instead of 2 day. Does such a thing exist?

Not in the smartphone market. Even the iP4 isn't going to make it seven days. The SGS2, iP4, and a few others can manage about 2 days with lighter use, but if you want a smartphone, get used to plugging in nightly.
