So I'm trying to decide between these phones. Which of these would you recommend or not recommend? The HTC Desire, Motorola Milestone (Droid in the US), Nexus One or IPhone 4? Will all the android phones be upgradeable to 2.2 or does that depend on the carrier?

Actually im kinda wondering the same thing. Been reading around a lot and I have decided to go with either the HTC Incredible, the EVO 4G or the Nexus One..

Incredible i can get for about 80 bucks a month on verizon
EVO for about 60 bucks a month on Sprint
or the Nexus One for about 30 bucks a month on ATT, but I would have to front 600 for the phone...

What to choose...

Of those listed the Nexus One/iPhone4 are prob the best choices. Nexus one is pretty much the first to get all the Android updates as it is a Dev phone.

This is not going to go well.

Haha.

My suggestion is to look at the new phones, I think you should skip the Droid and Nexus 1, those are outdated phones.

Look at the Samsung Galaxy S, EVO, Droid X, Droid 2, Incredible, iPhone 4. These phones are the top dogs.

Ask yourself the obvious questions.

Keyboard?
Sense UI, Touchwiz, MotoBlur?
Android or iOS4?
4"+ or 3"+ screen?

The above are glaring differences between these devices. Also all Android phones are upgradable to 2.2, but this is dependent on the manufacter. ie: HTC, Samsung, Motorola

The Nexus One is outdated but the Incredible is not? Although it has been surpassed by a few devices, the N1 is actually still very near the forefront in terms of hardware which is pretty remarkable 7 months in.

Throw in the facts that you get Android updates well before anyone else (many N1 users have been rocking Froyo for 2 months now) and tons of tweaks/ROMs/etc. from the dev community, and the N1 is still plenty viable IMO.

I guess I should replace the HTC legend with the Desire in that list since it's the successor.

I'm going to assume you're an AT&T guy? EDIT: I see you're in Canada, so you need 850/1900. This puts you and I in the same boat as I'm a AT&T guy who needs 850/1900.

Milestone - you need the Telus version. it sells for well over $600 still. This is assuming you want NAM 3G. Remember, this is NOT as customizable as the DROID is. The Milestone has a locked bootloader like the DROID X and is not cracked yet. The only way to load custom ROMs is to use the kexec vulnerability which is still under HEAVY development. The only ROM I see being tested is the Sense UI port which is.... in very alpha stages. Things like bluetooth and camera aren't even fully working. I wouldn't compare this to CyanogenMod at all. Imagine a bare bones mod essentially. Uhmm scratch the $600. You can get it for whatever Telus sells it for. Was it $499 without contract? Less w/ contract.

Desire/Legend - you want the NAM version they sell online somewhere. The Desire runs for over $700. It is an N1 with Sense. However they made some improvements like hardware buttons on the bottom, and a louder earpiece and speakerphone, both which sucked on the N1. The Legend has the nice unibody build. You will be getting an un-neutered Aria essentially with a nicer build. Very nice loudspeaker and earpiece volume. EDIT: I see Telus is getting the Desire, so this is a good buy!

N1 - A cool $539. Basic raw phone. Obviously not as refined as the Desire, but you can customize it definitely.

iPhone4 - Well you will have to contract up.

Ignore this as this does not apply anymore: The interesting thing to note is that the first 2 options, you can probably get away with the $15 data plan. I am a Milestone user and I'm still using the $15 plan since the phone came out. My friends who use the Nexus One have all been caught and tossed onto the $30 plan already. I'm guessing AT&T has the hunts down N1 IMEIs. They are not actively searching for the other phones as they are not marketed in the US.

Furthermore, people should realize OP is obviously asking for GSM phones. Not CDMA phones, so while there are many great phones out there, one of the primary decisions rests in: Are you willing to switch carriers/do you have a carrier in mind? Then you should look for a phone accordingly. But I guess some don't mind switching Sprint to Verizon to AT&T to T-Mobile. I'm not in that crowd.

I picked iPhone 4 because everything else felt cheap and plasticy plus I like long battery life. It has it's weaknesses like monthly cost on T, locked down to T, itunes, proprietary headphones, and a little small compared to current offerings. But nothing is perfect. Serves my calling, email, messaging and occasional checking something on the internet needs. Face it all phones are too small to browse. I've only Dled one game, blocks, and it's pretty cool but I'm not a phone gamer.

If I didn't pick iphone I'd be in Droid X due to decent batt life and gorgeous screen.

Man you really just got to try them out yourself in store and check out reviews like Anandtech. So personal.

Nexus One is officially orphaned since last week, if you want one, get it fast...

Of the phones listed, I'd snag an iPhone personally, Droid X, Nexus One, Droid, Desire in that order
