HT Subwoofer question...

I don't think there really is any, although...bass is much less directional than high frequency, but often you can still tell where it's coming from. Downfiring may help this problem a bit if you only have one sub. It also keeps you from needing a grill or other protection for the driver and ports if they're also facing down.

define a typical subwoofer?

many of the ht subs are actually downfiring in their cabinets...it all depends on the cabinet and how its tuned. since bass is omnidirectional, the direction of the actual woofer pointing shouldn't be that much of a difference in similarly tuned cabinets. now if you place a downfiring woofer into a corner, you could actually end up getting a bit too boomy, since it would resonate off the floor as well as the corner walls, so placement has more to do with how a sub actually sounds in many rooms....

I think a downfiring subwoofer is just a different way for a sub maker to make a sub. I'd imagine that down firing would be warmer, but honestly, it's up to you to choose the sub you like the best.

meh. we have ours firing into the back wall.

really pisses off the person in the bathroom when some heavy bass scene comes on.

Nice. Did you follow some sort of "do it yourself" guide?
More or less, just slightly modified, the plans adire audio has for their 15" tempest. I've shaken some books off a shelf in my closet and a picture off the wall in the opposing room :) It really makes movies enjoyable...watched X-Men 2 the other night and the dam cracking and breaking sounded awsome :D

Happen to have a link to that... Or any other good speaker build guides, for that matter.

TIA.

Some reading for you:

This is because the Shiva driver actually has more linear excursion when downfiring. Thus, this orientation will actually result in the maximum linear output for the system, at any SPL level.

Source: Shiva white paper on ported designs

Also, you might want to check out section: "2.2 Mounting" for more details on bottom mounting vs. side mounting within the following document.

Shiva

Granted, the documents that I linked for reference are for the Shiva. Not all drivers will fall into this category. However, I thought the sources of information would provide you with a good idea of why some drivers are bottom mounted vs. side mounted.

Enjoy!!

the holes in the support, is just to increase space within the box correct??

wingznut, you gunna do a DIY subwoofer??

if you do, go vented, and youll only need like 400 watts, also, vented normally produces a 3db increase. but you will have to tune pretty damn low

Essentially, yes. Also, it is for weight reduction and as Matt indicated in another thread - "the holes act as a holder for polyfill stuffing."

yea, the only thing, is polyfill doesnt do ALL that much. specially in a ported enclosure, but in a sealed, they will help slightly, but yeild some slightly better bass.

It really depends on a lot of things as to whether 400 watts is needed or not. With most sub enclosures, a 250 watt amp is more than adequate for filling most rooms with good bass.

In my current setup, I have a 200 watt amp driving a 15" Dayton DVC subwoofer and my bass is more than adequate in my 2,200 cubic foot listening area. However, that's all going to soon change when I finish building two Shiva boxes - driven by 250 watts each. ;)

i wonder if my parents would let me setup an HT, i highly doubt it, but LOL.

im gettin a 13w7 for my car though. should be loud enough :D

tempests or shivas are the best/ cheapest way to go for H/T though.

betcah you got that sub over at partsexpress didnt u tiles? lol

Actually, I picked up the pair of Shivas from Kyle of Acoustic Visions. While the 15" Dayton DVC originally came from Parts Express, I did buy it off a member of the Home Theater Forum who bought it, but decided not to use it in a project.

I have the 15" Dayton mounted in my Audiosource SW15 cabinet - which is not doing it any justice at all.
