Oh, another option for recievers in the $1000 for a full system range are refurbished HK units. Harmanaudio on ebay sells HK's factory refurbished units with new 2 year warranties. I got a AVR-325 last spring for about half what it was new.

Panasonic digital amps mentioned earlier have gotten some really nice reviews too. They seems to not be in great supply anymore though.

If you get into the $400 range, the Pioneer 1014 is a great option. There's a couple huge threads on AVSforum about it. Great power and great features for the price. It's basically an elite receiver internals (the pioneer 52).

How big is this room you're trying to fill by the way?

And the purpose is movies mainly?... but they don't want a lot of bass?... or just not boomy bass?

They just don't want the bass to be too boomy, and its mainly for watching HD (things like CSI, the Super Bowl, etc.)
I've heard about the Pioneer 1014 and the fact that it was the internals of the 52, I forgot where I read about it though

EDIT: the room is about 15x12, but it only has three walls (the back is open to the kitchen)

Ok, that's not too big then 🙂 I was worried it might be like 20x25 with high ceilings or something. The larger the room the more efficient speakers you're going to need to fill it with good volumes.

HSU and SVS make excellent subs that could fit into your budget if you want them to. They will be powerful and wont be boomy.

Are you looking for a set of small speakers like the quintets or just whatever is a good deal?

Some subs to look at below the HSU/SVS lines might be
dayton 10" if you're looking for something under $225
For something more, a JBL e250 could be a nice option.
Or, add a BFD to the dayton to flatten out the response of it and get nice cleaner bass from it.
Abover the $300 mark, I think it would be worth it to spend it on an SVS PB-10 or HSU STF-2.

Might want to try this - you may not be able to swing the entire surround system, but it's a start.

Get an Onkyo TX-SR502 (or 602, if you want to spend a bit more), and some Athena speakers from Best Buy. From what I understand, they are some of the best bang-for-the-buck speakers you can get. Once I get a full time job, and have some money coming in, that's what I plan on doing. I've already got the reciever (a year-old TX-SR501), but I had to get a cheapo pair of Sony speakers to tide me over until I could get something better. I make no claims to being an audiophile; I just want a good system at a good price.

Oh, and if you want to go the HTIB route, check this out The same reciever as the 502 I mentioned above, and all the speakers to boot 🙂

yup. i got my f1's for $400/pair 2 years ago and they can be had for around $250 now i think. the f2's dropped from $600/pair to $400...sigh. i can't live without them.
