HT speaker reccomendations

I might be able to convince my dad to get a home theatre system soon (its ironic, we have a 54" Hitachi HDTV, a huge room, and use the crappy built in speakers) and was wondering what is the general consensus on good speakers. I'm pretty sure they aren't the thing you grab at Circuit City, so I'd like som reccomendations on where to buy said speakers too.
 
Hmm, I'd probably say 700-1000. I don't know for sure though. But no like 3000 dollar reccomendations, and no Blows please
 
If you wanna spend too much money then just buy a HT in a box. There are waaaay too many choices when you don't come up w/ a number on how much you wanna spend.

Edit, yup, for $700, buy a HT in a box from circuit city, good guys, etc.

And no, I'm not thinking the 300 dollar RCA HTiB they sell at Target/Wal-Mart/KMart/anywhere else. I want some decent speakers for movies, and maybe some music. From what I've heard, Polk is alright, Klipsch is pretty good, and Denon is the holy grail of speakers.

EDIT: Also, please no recievers with DVD players, I'm quite happy with the one I have

Awesome "boutique" type loudspeakers that won't break the bank.

It's a bit dated, but they still are a reputable company. Axiom is good as well.

I think these will be better than any Circuit City/BestBuy speakers you will find.
 
Onkyo makes nice stuff in this price range.

I like my set a lot... something like this could be a good option (especially if you like a lot of deep bass)

Fluance 5.0 set ($300 shipped)
SVS PB-10 ($460 shipped)

leaves $250 for receiver and cables
basic onkyo
and then with the rest, a sub cable and some speaker wire...

There are a lot of nice options in this price range. If you're not so much into the huge sub idea, you can get a lesser sub and get nicer speakers.

A refurb onkyo or denon is probably a good idea for this price range.

 
I have the B&W 300 series. Awesome sounding speakers. The 6 series are evn better but there out of your price range.

athena, JBL, klipsch, axiom, rocket, energy, PSB all make good speakers.

amps are a whole 'nother story - i personally am a big fan of the new panasonic digital amps...

if i were in your shoes, i would pick up a decent amp, then listen to as many speakers as possible to try and find one that sounds good to you (do you like bright speakers? warm speakers?) then start narrowing down choices by brand and price - if it comes down to it, spend the money on JUST the mains now, and upgrade the rest as you have time/money.

there have been lots of speaker deals lately on chubbywallet, FWIW...

LOL, I already have that speaker set on my PC, they hate it, gunshots and explosions from UT and CS drive them crazy

If someone could reccomend actual speaker models and recievers (with links?) that'd be better. I'm a bit of a Klipsch fanboy myself, as I've heard some really good Klipsch set up at my friend's house. Someone asked if I liked bright speakers or warm, I hate warm sounds.

So far what I've seen (and liked) in this thread, is Klipsch Quintet speakers with an ONKYO TX-SR502 reciever
 
If you have a pretty specific idea of what you want and like, you might want to head over to AVSforum and ask about the specific models or brands you're interested in. You'll get better luck finding people that have actually heard stuff you're thinking about over there.
