hsf which way should the fan blow away from or towards the cpu

The heat sink and fan I got that came together has the fan blowing towards the cpu. Makes sense, since you can't suck too much air from the direction of the heat sink.

it depends on the heatsink design, but for the most part they work better if they blow toward the hsf

but not all of them, the alpha 8045 is designed to have the fan pull air away from the hsf

if you go to the homepage of whoever makes your hsf it will probably say which direction they recommend

i do in fact have the alpha pal 8045 and on the way is a 68 cfm delta fan for it
it is in fact suppose to blow away from the hs

Well,

I've got a little first hand experience since I screwed up when I installed my new SK6 and had the fan sucking from the heatsink.

After I flipped it around I got a 4-5 degree C drop in temps!

Heatsink with fins - fan blow toward the heatsink.
Heatsink with pins/heat shroud - fan sucks air away from the pins.

not always

the zalman5000 series has fins, but they are designed to have the air sucked away 🙂

and as a side note i used to have a zalman5000 and if the fan was set to blow air toward the fins the temps would go up 4 or 5 degrees

Ok..well I looked on the thermalright website and could not find any info on direction of fan for the AX-7. Mine right now is blowing away from HS and I am getting 48 C non OCed (1800xp). So I guess I can flip it and see if it lowers...but anyone have any insight before I do so? Thanks.

I used to have Volcano 7 on my Athlon XP, I tried both way and no difference on temps.
In fact when it suck the air from the Heatsink, the mobo was cleaner, no dust.
I guessed when the fan blowing towards the cpu it also bring dust and spread it
all over the mobo.
