HSF size for K7S5A?

I'm buying a cheap K7S5A / XP1600 system, and when I came to choosing the fan I remembered
reading somewhere that some revisions had size problems with HSFs. So does anyone know what size HSF the latest revision (or whatever revision that Newegg is currently selling) can take?

or are there any cheap HSFs that'll fit it to look out for?

thanks...

Do you need a heatsink/fan unit with either low noise and/or high overclocking capacity, or just something to get the job done near stock speeds?

more a case of just getting the job done as the cpu won't be overclocked.

i was going to grab a Cooler Master's DP5-6I31C-A1 from newegg or a SVC GC68 till I got to thinking about size issues. I read the manual posted on the ECS page, but it doesn't mention HSFs...

The size issue I hear reported recently is that the new revision of the K7S5A won't work with the Alpha PAL8045 because there's a capacitor in the way now. I'd bet the GC68 would work. I'm using a Coolermaster DP5 on an overclocked Duron 1GHz @ 1.33 at the moment. I wasn't sure if the base was very flat and it had extrusion "grain" so I laid out some wet/dry sandpaper on glass and did a quick flattening. It's a trifle noisy, but it's paid for. If it gets to bugging me I might try a GC68 with the YS Tech adjustable-RPM fan.

edit: that's on a K7S5A, old generation, if it's any help. CPU temperature is 20C above motherboard temperature using Arctic Silver III (currently 34C/54C for mobo/case, because it's been a hot day today).

I used to use a Swiftech MC462A on the K7S5A I had, but like mechBgon, it was the "old" version. I'm not sure about the newer ones...:)

thanks for the input - well, i'm going with the SVC GC68 and crossed fingers. Still, it never hurts to have an extra fan lying around....

I think you made a wise choice. That HSF will do what you want (non-overclocked cpu) with no problem. It is rated to "about" an XP 1800+ system with the stock fan. If you order it and include a fan choice, the SVC GC68 w/fan choice, you will get both the stock 32cfm fan and whatever high performance fan you choose. Such a deal!
I've done the same thing with different cpu's and have not been disappointed. The last one I installed that HSF on was an XP 1600+ that ran "comfortable" temps at idle and at stress. While I don't remember the exact numbers, it was well within my "comfort zone" of under 55-60C (max) at full stress. Combined with the low dBa (sound) levels, this makes it a nice option and you should have no trouble.

I just installed an MCX462 on a shiny new K7S5A for a friend a couple nights ago. No problems, plenty of room.
