With a limit of $25 I don't think you're going to find anything.

High performance, look at the Tuniq Tower. Like all in this class though, mass/weight can be an issue. They ALL dramatically exceed Intel's recommendations, which IIRC is 470g.

Mid-level, try a Zalman 9500, Ultima 90, or Zerotherm BTF90.

It's possible it will cool fairly well but, with how close the fins are to the base and with the placement of the fan I'd wager the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 pro would be a better choice for about the same ammount. If you coudl up the budget just a few dollars the Xigmatec heatpipe cooler with exposed heatpipes to the base and a 92mm fan has been running about $30 and looks to be a ver good performer for the price.

If you have two 120mm fans lying around, what about this one?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...6835103026&Tpk=geminii

But I must mention, it's *huge*.
With the fans installed, it dwarfs my 8800GTS!

Given the size, it's a PITA to work around -- not sure if that would bother you.

though it does look really cool and does a great job of keeping motherboard and ram cool, it's not that great of a performer for the price.

im sorry theres so many things wrong with this post.

first off 4.0ghz is what most people even for wolfdale will call high end overclocking.

I have a wolfdale thats doing very nicely at a high overclock however, its on water, and im purposely pushing massive voltages at it to see if it will die from overvotlage. Im at 1.57Vcore @ 4.3ghz with loaded temps in the 45-50C ranges @ 18C ambients.

Variance is due to the GPU being loaded and not. Core Only block on a 8800GTS (G92) bench setup. <cpu wont do 4.5ghz even at 1.6Vcore> And it takes 1.4Vcore to pull 4.0ghz, 1.57vcore for 4.3ghz <hugh cost in power for +300mhz> *shrug*

Sorry no screenies, because i dont want noobies thinking this is a safe OC.

Anyhow, 4.0ghz from my observation takes around 1.37V-1.41Vcore for it to hold prime. This is considered upper "safe" mark for air sinks. But the air sink would need to be a GREAT sink.

Op, sacrafice the extra 20-25 or so and get yourself a top tier sink. The worst that can happen is you spending a little extra cash, but the result is a better setup with more headroom.

And whever overclock you can get now, will die during the summer without the headroom. Hence why i recomend you to bite the expense and go for the larger class sink if your heart is at that oc.

EDIT: yes i am purposely killing that E8400. I want to see how long it takes b4 a 45nm Processor will die @ 1.5Vcore + So no need to warn me. I know what im doing. :T

aigomorla: i wish i had th emoney to kill chips LOL

anyway some people are getting 4.2 on air with less then 1.4Vs useing things like the 120 ultimate and the turniq, very chip dependent but the OCing thread has some people that high with lower voltages on air, however thats not comon

im at 3.95 440x9 1.36v with an ultima 90, ram doesnt like much more then 440 but this is fine for me

chips always carry a YMMV tag on them :D

And yeah, my chip isnt so special because it takes about 1.4V for it to do a 7 hour prime without failing.

Orthos it will pass at 1.37 so i decided to ban orthos. Its crap compared to prime95 25.4 and higher.

And she can pull 4.2ghz @ 1.41-1.43 But im not interested in 24/7 overclock.

She's being pushed to her teeth right now and im gonna find out exactly how long it takes to kill it.

Oh i got the chip for cheap and its a dualcore, so i dont care much about it. Its lifespan estimate will only lasts for another 2 yrs at most until they get faded out with quadcores.

How about the next one you want to kill you just send to me instead? lol, I wish I had the budget to see how long a CPU will last at breakneck speeds. Then again, I can't seem to kill my A64, maybe I'm just lucky but, the only part I've burned out lately is a 6200 that had been softmodded to a 6600 and voltmodded to be overclocked. Well, and hard drives but, those seem to hit or miss with me.

Good advice Aigo, except right now you don't need to with the cooler I linked. It's extremely good for the $. Here are some more reviews:

Beat the Tuniq Tower

Bottom of page - Quad - Beat Zalman 9700, Enzotech Ultra-X, Tuniq Tower, Scythe Infiniti, Big Typhoon VX despite being tested with the highest ambient temps from all the coolers!

havent been keeping up with air sinks, but it looks like it will do a good job.

oh aigomorla. i just killed my 680i again, and my 8800GTS died for no reason, so stop trying to kill chips and send the money you save to me. I actually did a suicide run with my E6400 running 3.733GHz (466*8) @ 1.55v stable-ish on my TR U120 for 6 months. Then 3.6GHz until I got my quad. It's still running fine over a year later.

oh, and @ OP, if you ever decide for a better cooler, you can pick up the original Thermalright Ultra 120 for around $40.

The exposed heatpipes are a great idea but, one must wonder why xigmatek was the first to do it. There has to be some reason that thermalright or thermaltake or arctic cooling or cooler master or any of other teir 1 manufacturers didn't get to already.

I understand your skepticism. But you could have said the same thing about AMD's internal memory controller, the first ever heatsink to introduce heatpipes, the first ever perpendicular recording hard drive, a unified shader core graphics card....etc. Just because you are the first to introduce something, it doesn't make it either bad or necessarily great. That's why we evaluate the buying decisions based on the reviews from various sites and user feedback. Although it might not be the best heatsink on the market, it seems to perform really well across many reviews now.

1 More Review

It beats Thermalright Ultra 120 (not extreme version) and Zalman 9700 by 4*C while using a slower fan. Even if it's not the best, for $25 it represents amazing value.

Zaward came up with the HDT design and has a patent for it. Either Xigmatek doesn't care about the patent, or it licensed it from Zaward. The patent might be the reason why so many other companies aren't putting out their own HDT designs?

Sharkoon has an HDT cooler too:

Ah, thats news to me. I wonder if the patent has just recently lapsed or what cause there are actualy what 4 or 5 brands now with exposed heatpipe designs. I can think of Sharkoon, OCZ, Kinwin and Xigmatek, the last two are the same heatsink with different fans but, it's still another name on a heatsink, thats way too many companies for them to just be ignoring a patent.
