I have several stock heatsinks lying around from some Core 2 Duo's that I purchased. Could I use these with an Intel Pentium D 805?

Yes. You should be fine. The 805 temps may be a few degrees warmer, but still in the acceptable range unless you overclock.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm under the impression that the HSF get comes with the boxed Core 2 Duos is identical to the old LGA 775 Pentium HSFs.

It was sort of a crap shoot, really. Yes the overall look remains very similar, however, Intel has changed the designs at times, and offered better heatsinks with certain retail kits. Some have taller fins, some have copper on the bottom, etc, etc.

One example :

That seems to be a cooler for a 478, not a LGA-775. Then again, I haven't personally seen a 478 in years, so I plead ignorance if I'm wrong. The 775 HSFs (at least the ones I've seen) are roundish and usually all aluminum. Intel cut a few corners, so to speak ...

Now that you mention it, I never really paid attention to the bottom of the stock HSF I got with my C2D. I just sort of stuffed the HSF back into the box after I had pried the chip out, and tossed it aside. I might take a closer look at it later to see if they stuck me with an all-aluminum one, or if I got a nicer one.

Btw, $20 for a stock cooler is a ripoff, if I ever saw one :p.

Yep. $20 is too much, but the fact remains that Intel makes many different revisions of their S775 coolers. Some Aluminum, some with copper, etc.
