I got to thinking this morning (yeah, I know. I should avoid that), about a HSF design that would probably work pretty good.
Take a cone that basically comes up with a curve that gets steeper as it goes up, add fins that come out in a radial fashion and make the overall shape to be a cylinder. Put a squirrell cage fan on the top, with the round open part facing down (sucking), have the output duct straight to the back of the case.
I'm thinking that the conical shape would help ensure that airflow comes in smoothly without a large amount of restriction, and the cone shape would help ensure that the fins dissapate heat all the way up.
