Okay, now I obatined a Western Digital External case (it used to house a 250 gig WD Drive, but my friend's bro took out the 250 gig and left it apart and gave it to his brother [my friend] along with some old broken 4gig maxtor hdd...and he sold it to me for 10 dollars) and I wanna slap in a 80 gig Barracdua...So I connected everything and loaded up the sucker but I couldn't get it to be recognized on the USB connection or the Firewire connection.

I have the HDD connected to the IDE cable, and I have it connected to the power. There is a wire that connects the hdd light to some PCB and that works

The only thing that isn't connected are the flouresent lights (one on each side) because they were broken.

Now I plug it up and it doesn't work. I'm actually confused at what to do~ i have had friends come and easily plug up their externals and it gets recognized instantly, but now isn't what is occuring. Does anyone have an idea as to what to do, or should I just chuck it and realize that i didn't get a external case for 10 dollars as i hoped?

ineteresting~ i tossed my 200 gig WD in therea and i can get it recognized ONLY through the firewire port (The 2nd port~ the first one doesn't do anything)

USB still won't recognize tho :\ and while yes I know Firewire is better and that doesn't bother me what interface I'm using, if i wanna drag it over to a friends house, I doubt they have firewire so i gotta use USB

any ideas men?

EDIT:
....and the plot thickens~

So now what I did was on accident I had the power unplugged and then i plugged in the usb and windows (xp~I don't have SP1 and i don't wanna download it on this 56k) says "usb device not recognized- one of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctedion, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, please click on this message"

now obviously if the drive itself is plugged in without power, no $hit it can't get to the HDD~ that makes sense.

but when i plug in power and try the USB (first with the usb plugged in and then w/o) i get no message.

Do you think maybe I need SP1? I know that is for USB 2.0, but since firewire works for me I dun care~ as long as it works on friend's pcs i'm happy

SP1 is worth a try.

hrmm....but then why would it not work with the latest SP installed on my Win2kpro rig? I'm the "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" kind of person~ though in this instance it is broken...but i haven't had much success in the past with service packs so i usually try to just update what i need manually via windows update rather than just take a huge pack of them...
