Tom's River, NJ (next to the place MTV is at this summer). They found a dead crow, sent it off for testing and it came back positive for West Nile.

Spooky.

Not true.

Down here in Louisana, I think we have 7 cases of death if i remember correctly. We have a pretty bad outbreak down here.

A few of the victims were in their mid 40's I think.

Yeah, southern LA is paranoid now.

I don't see what the big deal is with West Nile. I mean, less than one percent of the people who are infected show any symptoms, and the main people that die because of it are elderly. Then again, the elderly can die if they get the flu, but people don't think twice about it.

IMO, the West Nile virus is being blown way out of proportion. Its a virus, many people will contract the virus and it will pass without them even realizing they were sick. The elderly and those with susceptible immune systems should be worried, but there are not going to be mass deaths from this virus.

I believe the deaths have been among the elderly, there is one man in Louisiana that has the virus and is 34.

Im scared :Q Im in New Jersey too and I have like 3 mosquito bites on me...make it stop. Make them go away! IM SCARED!!

Yeah im in winnfield..... everyones scared here too, people bringing their kids into the hospital when they are even remotely showing signs of the flu..

West Nile is some nasty crap.

2 dead crows with west nile found in Williamsport, just 10 minutes drive away from my neighborhood.

I think maybe it's not the mesquitos that are spreading it, but rather the crows. :Q

Crows can not "spread" it, they only are transporters.

It works like this - Crow in NJ gets infected with virus by mosquito. Crow flies over to New York. New York mosquito bites infected crow and is in turn infected with the virus. New York mosquito bites non-infected NY crow. NY crow in now infected. Infected NY crow flies south twords PA and is bitten by non-infected mosquito. Mosquito by PA now has it, and passes it on, and so on and so forth.

Crows can not pass it on to other crows or other birds. They are simply carriers from point a to point b. A crow can fly up to 70 miles a day away from it's roosting areas. It doesn't take long for the virus to spread that way.

west nile is being blown out of proportion. of the 1% of people that get the west nile virus only 5% of them will actually develop severe illness (typically the elderly and immune comprimised) of that 5% 15-30% will die. You do the math.

what I'm saying is, while it may be a hazard . ..though mega rare . . . you should be more worried about your cholesterol level and heart disease. You're much more likely to die from that. or getting hit by a car.

Here in America we are afraid of everything because we have such a good life.

The media blow something out of proportion? No way. Now if you'll excuse me I have to lock my doors and be sure to stay away from all water because all of the shark bites.

😉

Yeah, it is out of proportion. Everyone here is paranoid.

Here in LA, you can't avoid mosquito bites. They are a fact of life.

AMEN!!!! 1000's of people die from the flu, but you don't hear the media reporting that everywhere, do you? You're only at risk if you have a weak immune system, so don't sweat it people. If you're a normal, healthy person, you're at no risk
