Help, I am trying to get the scan to email function on a HP 4100mfp laserjet working for a friend. I was thinking there would be an app to scan through the network from a computer but nooo, it's got to much harder. There is not a whole lot in the manual about it, or I'm just not grabbing the idea. Here is a snippet from the manual about it:
The 4100 is connected to the 10/100 lan of a linksys router along with two computers. They are connected to the internet via SBC Yahoo! DSL. I have tried putting the DSL SMTP server IP address into the SMTP gateway entry but it would not connect, they have to use authentication in their email app so I think that may be the problem.
I have come up with a couple of ideas to try butI'm not at all familiar with the setup of a SMTP server/relay & would like your help & opinions.

The HP LaserJet 4100 MFP and 4101 MFP series products connect directly to the LAN, so that you can send digital documents without a dedicated computer. E-mail processing is done entirely within the product, from scanning through communicating with the network SMTP gateway. E-mail addresses can be acquired from an at-device address book or an LDAP server. The system administrator can configure e-mail parameters either over the network using the embedded Web server or HP Web Jetadmin, or at the control panel.
