okay, too many posts on this thread for me to figure out what is going on anymore....

so what is the bottom dollar I would have to pay for a laptop (and which model are we now talking about?)?

thanks!

The $300 off coupons seem to only be working on BTO (built to order) laptops, not the pre-configured.

Also Staples is rumored to have a new $150 MIR starting Sunday 10/13 but the Compaq $100 MIR expires 10/12.

What's your (after coupons/rebate) budget?
Do you have a Staples B&M near by?
What do you plan on doing with your laptop?
What are the min specs you'd like to see?

Wow Rossman, thanks for always taking the time to respond so thoroughly to posts! It is very appreciated.

My budget is under $600

I do have a Bricks and Mortar Staples near me.

I don't plan to do much with my laptop except for web design, word processing, web surfing (I am thinking about connecting it to a wireless router). Basically it is just going to be a glorified (but portable and electronic) pad of paper. : )

I can't decide if I need 256mb of ram...128mb may be enough?
I'd like at least a 1.1 Ghz processor.
I'm sure 8 Gb harddrive would suffice.
A 15" screen would be nice.

Now $600 almost sounds like too much. I will used my desktop for my burning and more demanding needs.

Any suggestions?

Thanks again Rossman!

rnmcd - Since you missed out on the previous ZE1201 deal I think you're SOL because $600 is a very very low budget.

I know the minimum for the $300 coupon is $1,099 but there's also a $150 off coupon for under $1,099 purchases.

The HP is probably the cheapest, so if you wanna take your chances wait until Sunday 10/13 for this new $150 Staples MIR and I think there's a $100 HP MIR out there.

I highly doubt you'll get it for $600 or less though, maybe $700 after factoring in shipping, sales tax, etc.

I'd go with 256MB RAM, Windows can run on 128MB but it's slow and it struggles.

Current "Deals" that I am aware of, in order of expiration:

$30 off online coupon from Staples. Unknown expiration (at least to me).

Compaq "Summer Savings Rebate" for $100. Expires Oct. 12, 2002.
Staples in-store $50 off $500 purchase coupon. Expires Oct. 15, 2002.
$150 instant off at Staples on BTO Laptops under $1099 ( includes HP and Compaq ). Expires Nov. 2, 2002.
$300 instant off at Staples on BTO Laptops over $1099 ( includes HP and Compaq ). Expires Nov. 2, 2002.
HP Offer (rebate, software, or hotel discount). Rebate is $100. Expires Dec 2, 2002.

It is rumored that there is a Staples $150 rebate on laptops (no details) that will begin on Oct. 15th, 2002.

So, to put together a sample minimum-expense deal or two:

COMPAQ 900Z (before Oct. 12):
$1124 - $300 - $50 - $30 - $100 (rebate) = 644 + tax + $75 shipping (which you might talk a B&M Staples manager to waive ).

If the $150 mail-in rebate is true and applicable, you could try:

HP ZT1000 ( Oct. 13-Oct. 15):
$1274 - 300 - 50 - 30 - 100 (HP rebate) - 150 (Staples Rebate) = 644 + tax + $75 shipping ( which you might talk a B&M Staples manager to waive ).

Ironically, the same price ?!?

I can once again confirm the 150 MIR starting 10/13...its part of the columbus day savings special going on... you guys can trust me.. i havent been wrong in the past..

I would like to clear up the whole issue on tax:

Since the 300 dollars off is from HP or compaq, the CSR has two options when they enter the coupon. One is a "Staples coupon", the other is a "Vendor Coupon" if they enter it as a vendor coupon you have to pay tax on the whole thing, if they enter it as a Staples coupon you dont have to pay tax on the coupon.. I don't know if this helps anyone understand it better.. i figured i would just let everyone know..

Ok since I'm waiting for my 1500T to be delivered I've tossed and turned about the speed of the Celeron. The 900z can have up to a Mobile AMD 2000XP put into it which unless I'm mistaken will totally kick the Celerons arse! So since I can configure the 1500T for the Celeron upto a 2.2 P4 can I do this MYSELF after the warrenty expires? Or are there other options such as the P4 M CPUs (I doubt it but I thought I'd ask).

But what if we use $150 rebate(generic) on 900z after Oct12?
It should be $594 after rebate then? What do you think?

A coupon is a coupon. Tax laws don't distinguish between types of coupons, at least not in Connecticut and I really doubt they would anywhere. I don't doubt that someone told you that but its wrong. As soon as I get my laptop I will be disputing the incorrect charge with my credit card company by sending them my confirmation email showing the amount that should have been charged. Its totally ridiculous to think that a major retail company doesn't know something as basic as how much tax to charge when a coupon is used. They have a legal department. They have a tax department. Staples knows better. They're trying pad their profits or cut their losses by overcharging taxes and hoping no one notices. Unbelievable!

Excellent deal except that taxes are included before mail in rebate, that's for sure. With Staples, they may charge you taxes before those instant rebates and coupounds.

Is this better??????

Actually, a coupon is NOT a coupon. There is a differenece between a vendor coupon and a manufactures coupon. M coupons are deducted after tax (watch when you use a coupon at the grocery store). V coupons are deducted before tax. undone is correct on this for most localities, there will lways be exceptions. I read the law for Colorado over and over again and found the stated facts...most other states tax info I read were the same as well.

i have worked at staples for a while and i can tell you that there is indeed a difference on a MFG and a staples coupon. For example when i sell a cell phone, we enter a 215 dollar MFG coupon into the system, and the customoer does indeed pay tax on it.. if its was a staples coupon the register would not charge tax... i dont know if this is legally right or not.. i just wanted to point out the difference

GEEZ,

people,

why do you have pollute this thread by mindless quotes of paragraphs of text?

If you want to quote something, just quote a phraze or a sentence.

No need to quote entire posts, especially if those post already include quotes of other posts.

Does anyone know if the HP ZT 1000 is USB 2.0 or 1.1? I see no mention on HP's site just that it has 1 PCMCIA slot and firewire. Also how good is the Video Graphics ----S3 Savage4 AGP -- 4X 3D Graphics? Thanks.

That would kick ass, but I guess they'll try their best to deny the price adjustment. I'll drop by a b&m store on sunday and try my luck :)

stingbandel, let us know how the replacement is when you get it. hope they actually got someone to inspect it before sending it out.

i'm still considering getting a replacement, but i'm wondering if that will affect the rebates and stuff with the different serial numbers and ship dates from compaq.
