when they first bought palm they were hyping how they planned on putting webos or something on all their computers.

i wonder what will become of that now

There are posters on PreCentral talking about how glad they were that they bought their TouchPad at Staples already, LOL.

Sawyer, you're right, they're pretty brain dead over there. 😀

If you pull of 2 for 2, I'll paypal you ten bucks. 🙂

That does sound interesting.

Sensamp, I'm in for $10 as well 😀

Ha...i am watching a commercial for the Touchpad as we speak.

Definitely did not see them throwing in the towel before at least giving the Pre3 a shot.

I guess this explains why they didn't announce the Pre 3 release date in the USA yet. . . it's never gonna happen.

The announcement said "it will discontinue operations for webOS devices, specifically the TouchPad and webOS phones." Is it possible that HP will still keep the OS alive, and simply license it out to 3rd party manufacturers like Google does? Since HP will now be a software & services company, it might actually make sense.

Ceasing WebOS makes perfect sense. Android, iOS and to some extent Win 7 are too powerful to compete with.

That said, I was shocked that HP wants to stop making IBM clones, and move into software. What kind of bollocks move is that, and frankly the strategic planning team of HP must have been tripping or something. 😀 In seriousness, it's a baffling move.

HP is the largest selling IBM clone maker. Despite the rise of tablets and smartphones, PCs still sell well enough, and at this point at least show little sign of declining demand/sales. So why discontinue the PC making arm? Yes, tablets and smartphones are the future, but as said PCs aren't in a sharp decline. It's also a risk since even if they buy the UK company, HP still has to forge a reputation as a software maker, and not a hardware builder.

This makes sense to me, I can see it being an awesome OS with a bit of tweaking.
It doesn't make much sense for any of the manufacturers, though.

Samsung *buying* it would make sense because it would give them major weapons for their patent war with Apple, as well as more options if Googorola goes bad.

But I don't see why either Samsung or HTC would want to get in bed with a non-in-house software team that couldn't get acceptable performance on even a high-clocked dualcore.

The profit margins are getting razor thin.

Easier to make software, and have it supported by people making 75 cents an hour in another country.

Me holds his Pre, the Betamax of smart phones, to his heart. I was waiting for the Pre 3 to show up at Bell Mobility to upgrade.

What melancholy besets me. This is terrible news. 🙁

Any chance Android will be able to get running on this? It would be great if I could pick up one of these cheap and install ANdroid down the road
