I am looking at Athlon XP systems from both HP and Compaq and was wondering what the differences between the two are. The specs are very similar, but the HP is almost $100 more. I know that HP now owns compaq, but will there actually be a difference besides the name on the case? Is one better than the other?

Who designs and manufactures the HP & Compaq brands? Each used to design their higher end schtuff. Compaq, at least, outsourced manufacturing for consumer PC's before the merger.

In case it wasn't obvious from the posts above, HP owns Compaq, Compaq is just a HP brand now.
Some of their stuff is actually fairly decent, some workstations we've picked up recently have had Asus motherboards in them, don't know about their consumer stuff though.

Of course, almost everyone here will flame HP and Compaq, but to answer your question they're both pretty much identical. The HP's are being marketed as their higher end stuff (better internal parts?) while the Compaq's are being marketed as their lower end/consumer-level PCs, thus the reason for the $100 difference. But then again, Compaq does offer a high end (?) gaming rig (the Compaq X Gaming PC) and I hear it's actually pretty good too.

I have friends that actually own both (HPs and Compaq's) and have never had any problems with them.

Thanks everyone. That's about what I figured. If I decide to buy one, i'll just opt for the Compaq and save the money.
