I'm still looking for a notebook to take back to school with me this spring(took a sem. off). My price range is $800 bucks and under. I think i've narrowed it down to these two models.

Compaq Presario 2172us

hp pavilion ze4502us

I found a 10% off coupon so they would both be on the high end of my price range. I would prefer to spend less but it looks like you get alot more bang for your buck by going with these models over the next set down.

Is a 15in display much better than a 14.1?

Which has the better keyboard?

Which makes less noise?

Which is least likely to die on me?

I've looked for these answers but reviews on these models are hard to come by. Thanks for your time.

i would get the compaq, compare the specs and you will see that the compaq exceeds the HP by .07 ghz

i have an hp, and it is wonderful. The compaq models have been known to die a lot more often than the hp's, and even though that quality is changing now that they are the same company, I would still trust the hp over the compaq anyday. I have seen too many compaqs fail too quickly.

The Compaq has the Athlon XP M 2500+ and the HP has the 2400+. The difference here is negligible. There is really no difference in these machines in every aspect, including build quality. They are both outsourced by the same ODM. The only difference is in the "badge". Pick whichever one you think looks better, everything else is the same. BTW if you were to look at these machines in person you will see that they are the same machine one with a slightly faster processor. Kind of akin to two of the same cars in different colors one having one more horsepower than the other.

I have a Compaq 2100. I got the 15 inch SXGA+. Someone recommended getting that over the 15 inch XGA.

I don't think it makes any difference. I recently bought a Compaq X1000 and at least half the parts say HP on them (power adapter, notebook itself, etc.). There really is virtually no difference between them part wise.

Great laptop.

I have had the pleasure of being a Compaq Presario 1500T owner since September 2002, so about 14 months.

Not a single problem, it's not the most portable laptop (15.0" SXGA and weighs around 8 pounds) but it is loaded and was only $800-ish
