http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/10/hp-touchpad-price-drop-goes-permanent/

This is according to a reported internal memo from the company highlighting the decision to permanently price the 16GB and 32GB WiFi versions of the tablet at $399 and $499 "effective immediately."

Hmm. I wasn't impressed overly impressed with the TouchPad when I played with it, but the price cut makes it a little more attractive. Obviously, their app catalog lags far behind iOS and Android though.

Smell of death is overpowering. MBAs at HP who suggested the original price should be fired. But this is HP so it's business as usual.

I found about the Staples deal too late ($299) with HP price cut and $100 off coupon or I may have a tablet finally.

My Samsung Cappy makes me wanna throw it at least five times a day. Randomly slow when trying to make a call or use google voice. I was planning to get this HP or Asus Transformer this up coming backcheck to give me a device to play with until the new gen phones come out.

Has Apple sued HP over the TouchPad yet? Its closer to the iPad design than Sammy's products, Moto's Xoom, or Asus's Transformer.

root your captivate. the slowness is due to the filesystem that Samsung uses. install a rom (or a kernel) that mounts your filesystem as ext4, and the phone will be much smoother.

samsung phones are impossible to brick, they give you the tools to fix it.

Yeah, but what's the point? Lack of sales will kill off this product before HP and Apple would settle the lawsuit.

HP needs to push it a little, bring in more devs for their app store. These things really sink or swim by the applications available.

I've been saying this for a while. With iPad at $500, Android et al better be $400 or under.

Staples sold completely out of them during their sale. I picked one up and am really happy with it.

Really doing that bad? I've seen more ads for this thing than any other tablet (iPad sold itself...). For $400, I kinda wish I got this instead of the Playbook.

Didn't we all see this coming since the beginning ??
I don't know WTF these companies were thinking when they decide to price their tablets the same as the iPad2.
Seriously ??
You're coming out with a tablet an average consumer know nothing about and price it the same at an iPad2 ??
We smelled death since the beginning.

BTW, all the ugly-ass webOS HP got coming out will also be instant death.
Their premier webOS phone has the same kiddie-looking form factor as the failed miserably Pre.
Seriously ??? The design engineers actually thought it was a good idea to come out with bigger size Pre's.
Nokia should have bought Palm when it was so cheap just for webOS if nothing else.
We could have had good looking webOS phones by now.

This was going on during the Staples sale. That means far less than you all are making it out to be. I hear Staples completely sold out their inventory of 16gb versions during their sale.

Wouldn't be surprised to find out that the only reason the touchpad wound up on woot was Amazon wanting snag sales from people who didn't know about or couldn't get in on the staples deal.

I don't think that developers want to develop tablet apps for 5 different platforms (iOS, Android, QNX/Blackberry), WebOS, and Windows Mobile), especially considering that only two of those platforms have any real market share right now.

My hunch is that only iOS and Android will survive the "tablet wars", and the other platforms will become obscure geek collector items like the Coleco Adam and Commodore Amiga.

Let's see, the thing is discounted over $100 off retail, Andy Reuben loses his position, and the product was listed on Woot.

What exactly would you call that? o_O

This is a company that is still selling the iPAQ
If any company can keep a corpse of a tech product alive for a decade, it's HP.

This is off topic, but I played with that phone when it came out (about 2 years ago) and I actually kinda liked it. Nice keyboard, touch screen, WM 6.5.3 which had its flaws but got a much worse rep than it deserved. If the touch screen had been capacative I might have picked it up.

What is the point of releasing yet another $500 tablet when you have almost no user base already? Were they expecting this thing to TAKE OFFFFF because people would be obsessed with webos enough to choose it over android/ios and their actual useful app stores? I love webos and I think the Veer and its marketing campaign is a great idea (towards kids--> Miranda Cosgrove commercials) but this tablet was clearly going to fail unless it had great hardware which is far from the case.

Also my pixi is falling apart after 3 months of use... I'm going Droid unless the Pre 3 is great (if it ever comes out).
