HP TouchPad...64GB

Apparently 200 of these were available for $250 from CostCentral and sold out within 20 minutes of that information being posted on SlickDeals. AFAIK these are the only 64GB white bezel TouchPads that were sold in the United States.

After having my order from HP, Barnes & Noble, and OnSale cancelled, I was pretty happy to get one. I'd still rather have the 16GB model, but hey, I'm not going to complain. The question is, do I keep it or sell it and buy three 16GBs? 😀

Anyone else here get one?

that's pretty cool. It says 1.5ghz. 🙂 how much do these go for on Ebay that you can buy three 16gb?

$600+. 16GBs are on Madison's Craigslist for $200. I put an ad up on Craigslist and I'll see if I can get any bites for a trade. My sister would love one and then I could give one to a friend while keeping one for myself. Spread the love, as it were. 😀

Its processor runs at 1.5GHz, not at 1.2GHz like the 16GB and 32GB versions. Apparently, it's the same CPU, just clocked higher at stock. So I'm not optimistic it can be OC'd a good 300-400MHz like the chip in the 16GB and 32GB TouchPads.

AFAIK they underclocked the chip in the original Touchpad. Anybody who bought one has probably OC'd it to 1.5 or 1.7 by now (here).

Well I couldn't resist...I opened it up last night & am using it now. I really like webOS. I won't put Android on this even if it gets ported. After a good six hours of extensive use, I find it to be fast, smooth, & stable. Everything 'just works.' Being able to watch Hulu & Amazon Prime videos is pretty sweet. The screen is gorgeous. 64GB is enough for a ton of PDFs, MP3s, & videos.

The only bummer is the limited app selection. There are some slick educational apps for ISO iOS (gd autocorrect) that I'd like to have on the TouchPad. But I primarily use the tablet to read PDFs, blogs, & check my email & Facebook accounts - & it works great for that.

As for the 16GB vs 64GB....the only reason 64GB would be nice is if you were going to store movies on the device and didn't have access to wifi for extended periods of time.

I bought 2 of the 16GB models simply because I know it took me 1 year to fill up 4GB on my android phone, mostly by using the 5MP camera for videos/pictures. Streaming music/videos just about eliminates the need for large storage and puts more emphasis on bandwidth. (which is how it should be) The real question you should ask is whether or not the battery life (typically 3 years) of the device will affect its life expectancy enough to make a difference in whether or not you can fill up 64GB.

If you're like 80% of the people out there, the 16GB should be enough.

The extra space would also come in handy if a duel/triple boot to other OS's should arise 🙂

Ha...

Today was my first day back on campus the entire day doing my normal work routine. Armed with my new TouchPad, which has my entire PDF collection on it (~30GB), and a goodly assortment of music (~25GB), I found myself...using my laptop almost all day.

I had an iPod Touch for a while and liked it but ultimately found it to be an extraneous toy. After only a day with a tablet, I now feel the same way about tablets - they simply aren't for me.

It's terrible for productivity. Taking notes in PDFs isn't nearly as efficient as it is on my laptop. Taking notes in general isn't nearly as efficient as simply jotting them down on a piece of paper. Forget writing a paragraph or more. I can pull up a reference webpage faster on my laptop, and since its screen is larger, I can more easily show that page to a colleague or student. Portability isn't particularly crucial to me, as I 'set up shop' in two, maybe three locations everyday and it's not like my X120e is a big bulky brick.

It's fine for entertainment. As I said, being able to watch Hulu in bed on it was neat. But I read more often, and I found using a backlit screen tiring for my eyes after an hour or so of use. There's no way I could stay up until 4am with the latest page turner on a tablet, my eyes would fall out. Audio quality is very good, possibly great. But I could do that with my laptop too.

I can certainly understand that many people like a single device to do most things or even everything they do reasonably well. I'm not one of those people. I read thousands of pages of text every week, and not having a keyboard severely curtails my productivity. I was hoping the tablet could complement my laptop, but at the end of today, it did not.

Anyway, an interesting experiment on technology usage, and at least I won't lose any money reselling it even though it's now used. 😛
