Pretty amazing deal here, for the price of a 2-gen old recycled Android tablet or Kindle Fire, you can get a 7" tablet with full-blown Windows 8.1 (32-bit, not Pro) for $99 bucks. This would be an amazing gift/stocking stuffer for young nieces/nephews/sons/daughters that might need more functionality/backward compatibility than what is offered from iOS/Android. I personally had an Asus T100 last year and ended up needing more performance than the Atom, but it was a great entry-level tablet SoC.

Microsoft Store $99:

If you are a student, you might be able to get another 10% off with Microsoft's Teacher/Student discount.

Good looking deal. 1gb RAM (compared to 2gb in say the Venue 8 Pro) is a bit of a turn off but I mean it's much cheaper then it's competition seems like it would probably be a really solid portable productivity/web browser.

In for one. Thanks OP. I did get another 10% off with the student discount and free 2 day shipping with Bing Rewards.

Nice, thanks for the confirmation the student/teacher discount works and glad you found the deal useful. :)

News that everyone has it at this price is great, I do remember Intel saying their goal was to get $99 Atom tablets on the market in 2014, I guess this is it. :) Most retailers carrying it means you should be able to stack it with whatever coupons they have, or the ability to use rewards to drop the price even more. Staples coupons are a good candidate here, they usually have $15-20 or 15%-20% off coupons that should drop this down to $80-$85+tax. Best Buy has their rewards certs and 5% back, so if you have some certs you can get this thing really cheap.

Mildly interested... but no digitizer, right?

I think my next tech purchase will be a decent Windows tablet that I can run with Photoshop and use a digitizer pen, to supplement graphics work on my main system, as well as something that I can use to view/listen to media.

Eh... $99 is regular price on this, and it's been lower.

Does this thing support "Desktop"? Because only the Desktop version of Skype supports skype userids. The MS Win 8.1 "Metro" version of skype only accepts MS userids, not real skype userids.

How does this perform with 1GB of RAM? Is it painfully slow (like Surface RT slow) or usable?

I imagine it will. Since Win8.1 comes with a "desktop" and this tablet uses Windows 8.1 with Bing. The Metro versions might be a little bit better on system resources though and since this only has 1gig of ram the app version of Skype might run smoother.

But how are you supposed to sign in, when it won't accept skype userids?

Skype is owned by Microsoft now, their app tries to link your Skype ID with a Microsoft account and you use that to log in. Makes switching accounts tricky.

Honestly I don't know. I don't own this tablet and I don't use Skype. My only experience with 8.1 is on my desktop pc and it runs programs not apps...period.
My post was more of a general knowledge type post than a how to post. Sorry Larry...wish I had a more concrete answer for ya.:(

It's "real" Windows and will run all desktop apps once you add a keyboard / mouse or using a touch keyboard. It will also run Metro touch apps of course.

I'm tempted to get it as a music player since it has a microSD slot, but a cheap Nokia phone would probably be better for that.

Really nice price and an IPS screen.

Looks like there is no video out - that would be a nice touch.

How did you get the student discount to work? It doesn't discount the stream 7 for me. In for one anyway. Had to pay $8 tax but oh well. Note, that the one in this deal is the signature edition. I think the only difference is that it comes without any added bloatware, free anti-virus (which I'll likely remove), and a year of office 365 (which I have free using my edu email anyway :)). Not sure if the O365 comes with the other vendors choice.

I'm typing from mine now. :)

Hmm, just noticed it isn't charging, and I have it plugged in to my laptop through a USB charging cable, same one I use for my android phone.

Edit: It's charging now, using the supplied AC to USB charger and USB charging cable. Says 5V, 2A. Guess it won't charge on a PC's USB port. That's sad, tablet lost a lost of utility for me right there.

heh...you got yours before mine even shipped. I bought mine from MS... :p

EDIT: Man, can't even check my order status.

We are sorry, an unexpected error occurred processing your request. Please try again.

Maybe they think I want to cancel it and order from Office Depot...which I was going to do if it hadn't shipped yet!
