HP showing internet connection, but not going online

Specs are these:

HP Model M8047c running vista Home Premium
C2 CPU @ 2.13GHz
2 GB RAM

This PC has a wireless card in it as well as a port for an ethernet hardline. This is a friend's PC that she was having problems going online with, so I took it home with me. I try and go online with IE, and it immediately comes up with "IE cannot display the webpage...Most likely causes blah blah blah"

I try and diagnose it, and it says that all hardware is working properly. I am showing at least 3 unsecured wireless access points, and cannot connect through any of them. I even tried my secured access point throuh my router, and then tried the hardwire into the ethernet port on the PC, and STILL am not able to get online.

What am I missing? Couldn't be LAN drivers or wireless card drivers if all hardware diagnostics are telling me that everything is okay.

If I post anywhere else, I rarely get an answer. Well the whole Vista experience kinda sucked, but after an hour and a half of HP support, a simple system rstore fixed the problem. Thanks for the help guys.

As far as the Network forum goes, this statement is greatly incorrect.

BTW. System restore avoided the problem but it did Not fix it.

In other words while I am glad that your computer is working, next time when something goes wrong you would be back at square one cause you do not know what the problem was.

Mod, please move this to the proper forum area, because of Jack's answer. I need to get this problem FIXED...not just avoided. Thank you kindly Jack.
