HP Scanner question...wont initialize.

My HP 4c scanner was failing the light response test, but making good scans. I did a test scan with a white sheet and found a reddish band on the right side of the image (about an inch wide). Taking it apart I found a yellow piece of tape under one mirror, I removed it and now it wont initialize. My other scanner (same type) doesn't have this tape.

Any ideas?
